"ER" Dominates Thursday Nights

Calif. -- April 5, 2002 -- NBC has dominated another Thursday, led this
week by “ER,” which posted the highest adult 18-49 rating for any
network series episode in the last eight weeks. “ER” also amassed
the highest overall viewer total for any series episode in five weeks.
NBC won the night by a commanding 35 percent among adults 18-49 and
by 1.3 million viewers overall, according to updated in-home viewing
statistics from Nielsen Media Research.
“ER” led the way with a 13.8 rating, 34 share among adults 18-49
and 28.5 million viewers overall. It’s the fourth-highest 18-49 result
and second-best viewer total for “ER” this season. Among adults
18-49, last night’s “ER” doubled its combined time-period
competition -- CBS’ “The Agency” (3.8/9 among adults 18-49, 9.4
million viewers overall) and ABC’s “PrimeTime Thursday” (2.3/6
among adults 18-49, 8.6 million viewers overall). “ER” also doubled
its slot rivals among adults 18-34, women 18-49, adults 25-54 and women
25-54. Among women 18-34, “ER” quadrupled the combined time-period
competition (with a 16.5 rating vs. a combined 4.0).
Compared with CBS’ 9-10 p.m. ET telecast of “CSI: Crime Scene
Investigation” (10.5/25 among adults 18-49, 26.8 million viewers
overall), last night’s 10-11 p.m. ET episode of “ER” scored higher
Nielsens by a 31 percent margin among adults 18-49 and by 1.7 million
viewers overall.
NBC opened the night with another convincing time-period win from “Friends”
(11.2/30 among adults 18-49, 22.6 million viewers overall), which beat
the time period’s combined major-network competition among adults
18-49. “Friends” topped the first half of “Survivor: Marquesas”
(8.1/22 among adults 18-49, 20.3 million viewers overall from 8-8:30
p.m. ET) by 38 percent among adults 18-49 and by 2.3 million viewers
overall.
In the 18-49 category, “Friends” has defeated “Survivor” 17
times this season and is undefeated when “Friends” is airing an
original episode.
At 8:30 p.m. ET, “Leap of Faith” (7.2/18 among adults 18-49, 14.6
million viewers overall) kept NBC a solid second among adults 18-49,
total viewers and virtually all key demographics.
NBC remained a strong second among adults 18-49 during the 9-10 p.m.
ET hour with “Will & Grace” (8.6/21 among adults 18-49, 16.1
million viewers overall) and “Just Shoot Me” (7.9/19 among adults
18-49, 14.7 million viewers overall). “Will & Grace” won its
half-hour over “CSI” among adults, men and women 18-34. “Just
Shoot Me” retained an impressive 92 percent of its 18-49 lead-in from
“Will & Grace.”
Updated nightlong adult 18-49 averages for April 4 are: NBC, 10.5/26;
CBS, 7.8/20; UPN, 2.6/7; ABC, 2.0/5; Fox, 1.6/4; WB, 0.9/2. Updated
total viewer averages are: NBC, 20.9 million; CBS, 19.6 million; ABC,
7.2 million; UPN, 6.7 million; Fox, 3.6 million; WB, 2.5 million.
NBC has now won 25 of 28 Thursdays this season among adults 18-49,
losing the night only with mostly encore schedules during the three
Thursdays closest to the Christmas holiday.
Compared with 18-49 results for the same night last year, NBC and Fox
showed increases last night while ABC and CBS were down. On the 39
nights since the close of the Winter Olympics, NBC has been up or even
on 30 nights, more than the other three major networks combined. CBS has
been up or even on 18 of 39 nights, Fox has been up or even on 8 of 39
nights and ABC has been up or even on 3 of 39 night.
NBC has been up or even compared with 18-49 results for the same
night last year on each of the last nine evenings.
