While Carter treats a difficult patient, new er resident Jing-Mei Chen (new series star MING-NA) assists him. Carter recognizes Chen, previously known as Deb, a former County General medical student who quit medicine and recently returned. Later, the strong-willed Chen tries to assist a gay female runaway whose parents want to send her to a treatment center for gender identity. Kovac administers to 18-year-old Dillon (BRIAN HOOKS), accompanied by his 14-year-old developmentally disabled brother, Jake (ANDREW FOGENAY WILSON). The two boys live alone.
