WB-An out-of-control truck barely misses a very pregnant Hathaway(Julianna Margulies) but cuts a wide swath of heavy casualties who flow into the ER, taxing the collective abilities of everyone on shift. Dr. Carter (Noah Wyle) unexpectedly treats the older and attractive ex-wife (guest star Rebecca DeMornay, "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle") of his cousin with unexpected repercussions. Drs. Greene (Anthony Edwards) and Weaver (Laura Innes) plot strategy when they hear rumors that the combative Dr. Romano (new series regular Paul McCrane) might be named as the new chief of staff. Dr. Benton(Eriq La Salle) must maneuver quickly during a mediation hearing if he is to prevent his ex-girlfriend Carla (guest star Lisa Nicole Carson,"Ally McBeal" ) from leaving the country with his infant son. Dr. Carter stumbles into a turf battle with paramedics when he and a new hotshot doctor (guest star Erik Palladino) rush out to help a construction worker who is critically injured just a block away. Dr. Benton parleys with a court-appointed therapist as he tries to stop his ex-girlfriend (Lisa Nicole Carson, "Ally McBeal") from moving to Europe with his son. 3)"Greene With Envy"

T.V. Guide- Alan Alda makes his first appearance as Dr. Gabriel Lawrence, an old friend of Dr. Weaver's who joins the staff as an attending physician. Lawrence arrives at the hospital and, almost immediately, he's splattered with the blood of a stabbing victim and snaps on a pair of gloves to assist in the ER. Upon meeting Dr. Greene, Lawrence reveals that everything Greene has heard about him is true, "apart from the brothel in Bangkok." The physicians later clash when Lawrence takes the liberty of discharging one of Greene's patients. Meanwhile, Dr. Kovac suspects a case of spousal abuse and the ER is the scene of a gun battle and a wedding.

Dr. Finch (Michael Michele) disagrees with the doctor of a child (guest star Miles Marsico) involved in an auto accident who wants to discharge the boy immediately. Jeanie (Gloria Reuben) counts down the hours until her marriage and gets a pleasant surprise among her wedding gifts. Dr. Romano (Paul McCrane) sticks Dr. Corday (Alex Kingston) with shepherding an inquisitive newspaper reporter (guest star Christine Tucci) who is preparing a profile on him. Dr. Benton (Eriq La Salle) tries to ignore some disturbing news about his son. WB-Cleo diagnoses a bratty little girl (guest star Jessica Sara) with food poisoning and is shocked when she reappears with more severe symptoms. An annoyed Dr. Greene tries to help his father sort out his insurance problems via long-distance phone calls when the old man runs his car into a tree, while Greene and the likable Dr. Malucci(guest star Erik Palladino) treat a skydiving victim and a distraught teenager who tried to hang himself. Dr. Lawrence -- always ready with an opinion on any case --argues with the nurses over his prescribed medication for another skydiving patient. Dr. Carter arranges to see recovering patient Elaine Nichols (guest star Rebecca DeMornay) again. A sympathetic Hathaway coaxes a pregnant but uninsured waitress (guest star Martha Plimpton) to come to the ER for an exam. As chief of staff, Dr. Romano orders Dr. Corday to do his dirty work and is not happy with an unflattering, tabloid-like newspaper story about one chaotic day in the life of the hospital's ER.

Then, Greene and Corday(Anthony Edwards, Alex Kingston) return to the ER and the action focuses on the desperate efforts to save the two victims. EpGuides.com-Weaver discovers Carter and Lucy. As police begin to arrive, Benton rushes between the two, being the only surgical resident on duty. Greene and Corday are paged to return to the hospital. Carter almost loses his kidney, but with quick thinking by Anspaugh, Benton is able to save it and Carter will be okay. On the other hand, Lucy has her chest cracked because her heart stops but she is stabilized. In the OR waiting room, while waiting for emergency surgery to fix a life-threatening blood clot, Lucy flatlines. Romano and Corday desperately try to save her life but she dies and the staff receives the news. Meanwhile, Paul Sobriki is found running naked down Michigan Avenue and is brought in. His wife arrives at the ER; incapable of believing her husband would be capable of such a violent act. And while Benton is busy with Carter, Cleo is forced to crack a man's chest open to save his life, resulting in Benton's ire.

KOVAC AGONIZES OVER CRUCIAL DECISIONS AFFECTING KIDNEY PATIENTS -- Dr. Kovac (Goran Visnjic) is unsettled about his responsibility to disqualify a series of patients with kidney failure when a precious donor organ becomes available, especially when one prospect (guest star Leslie Silva, NBC's "Providence") is unaware that she's pregnant and must choose between the baby or the transplant operation. A few feet away, Dr. Romano (Paul McCrane) decides to mix it up for a day in the ER trenches and clashes with two angry motorists (guest stars Mitch Pileggi, "The X-Files," and Ransford Doherty) as well as Dr. Weaver (Laura Innes) over proper treatment of a terminally ill pneumonia patient (guest star Rachel Roth). Dr. Carter (Noah Wyle) must do some fast-talking when a former patient, a diabetic young boy (guest star Ben Hecht) whose father previously had no insurance, reappears with dangerous symptoms. Drs. Finch (Michael Michele) and Benton (Eriq La Salle) are dressed down by Romano when a pharmacy misreads their scribbled prescription and issues a drug that nearly kills a constipated patient (guest star Jack Shearer). Dr. Greene (Anthony Edwards) gets angry when Dr. Corday (Alex Kingston) conspires with his crotchety father (guest star John Cullum) to place the senior Greene in a hospice.

NBC-ABBY WON'T LET FAMILY FEUD END YOUNG GIRL'S CHANCE FOR LIFE -- Abby (Maura Tierney) plays with fire when she intercedes on behalf of a sick young girl (guest star Dakota Fanning) who needs a bone marrow transplant -- but the most eligible donor is her half-sister (guest star Julie Marie Berman) whose divorced mother(guest star Sydney Walsh) refuses to okay the procedure out of spite for the girl's father (guest star Steven Flynn) who's her ex-husband. In another family, Dr. Greene (Anthony Edwards) admits his pneumonia-ridden father (guest star John Cullum) into the hospital and shares a rare but memorable father-son moment as the older man's time begins to wind down. Dr. Kovac (Goran Visnjic) gallantly offers to help Nurse Hathaway (Julianna Margulies) buy a used car and they enjoy their spring day on the town. Likewise, a daytripping Dr. Benton (Eriq La Salle) takes Dr. Finch (Michael Michele) out to Los Angeles to visit his toddler son and meet his sister Jackie (guest star Khandi Alexander) who can't help but interrogate her guest. Dr. Carter (Noah Wyle) is tormented by visions of his recent brush with death and draws Dr. Weaver's (Laura Innes) concern upon her return.

NBC-DR. GREENE SHARES MEMORIES WITH FATHER -- A weary Dr. Greene (Anthony Edwards) remains at home to care for his father (guest star John Cullum) and shares a tender moment, while a robust Dr. Kovac (Goran Visnjic) tries to court Nurse Hathaway (Julianna Margulies). In addition, faulty hospital procedure causes Dr. Benton (Eriq La Salle) to assail Kovac for not checking up on a patient (guest star Lincoln Kilpatrick) who now might lose his leg; likewise, Dr. Chen (Ming-Na) is horrified to learn that a simple metabolic test for infants could have prevented a boy's disabling brain seizure. Dr. Carter (Noah Wyle) assumes Greene's shift and is a whirling dervish of activity who can't resist taking over other doctors' cases as well. When an anemic teenager (guest star Polly Cusumano) refuses crucial treatment, Dr. Corday (Alex Kingston) makes a calculated gamble in order to assist her. Dr. Malucci (Erik Palladino) is enraged when a 6-year-old car accident victim (guest star Steffani Brass) claims that her father (guest star Jay Underwood) has been sexually abusing her.

Kovac's draining day continues when he attempts to browbeat a teenaged stabbing victim (guest star Emily Bergl) into allowing him to birth her unwanted and unborn baby despite her adamant wishes to let the child die. A combative Dr. Carter (Noah Wyle) is confronted by Dr. Greene (Anthony Edwards) and the other ER doctors over his behavior since being attacked.
