This is a fascinating look into how psychiatry is taught and practiced in America. Written by an anthropologist, the book looks at how the teaching methods and professional standards in the discipline of psychiatry are forcing the practice into two camps, the biomedical ("Prozac") approach to mental health vs. the psychotherapeutic approach. Obviously at this point, the biomedical approach is favored. Luhrmann describes how focusing on one approach, to the exclusion of the other, damages both the patients and the practice of psychiatry itself, and argues for a more balanced approach. This book thoroughly researched and well-thought out. It offers a piercing look at how the structure of psychiatric practice is vastly influencing how mental health research is perceived, and therefore funded, in our society.
