NOT BRAND ECHH. ISSUE #8

BEWARE THE FORBUSH-MAN, MY SON

BEATLES SGT. PEPPER CAMEO

"BEWARE THE FORBUSH-MAN, MY SON" WAS REPRINTED IN CRAZY COMIC #1 (FEBRUARY 1973)

  RELEASE DATE: 1968 JUNE

IN 1967 MARVEL COMICS RELEASED A PARODY TITLE - NOT BRAND ECHH!.
IT SENT UP MARVEL'S OWN HEROES, AS WELL AS THOSE OF THE "DISTINGUISHED COMPETITION!. IN FACT, NO-ONE WAS SPARED, AS STAN LEE MADE GOOD HIS PROMISE TO UNLEASH FORBUSH MAN ON AN UNSUSPECTING PUBLIC. THE RESULT? 13 ISSUES OF MADNESS... (AUGUST 1967 - MAY 1969)

That comic, Not Brand Echh (originally titled without "Not" at the beginning) was launched with a cover date of August, 1967.

The title was taken from a long-standing schtick in the letter columns, of referring to the competition as "Brand Echh". The comic book had a blurb at the top, reading, "Who Says a Comic Book Has to Be Good?" Underneath it was the logo "Not Brand Echh", with the word "not" smaller than the other two. It was with the fifth issue that they decided "Not" was part of the title and not the blurb.

Obviously, Mad magazine, which also started out parodying other comic books, was a prime inspiration for Not Brand Echh.

That was it for "Echh", but the next year, Marvel tried parody again, with Spoof (#1 OCTOBER 1970). It didn't last either, the 2nd issue not appearing until Nov 1972, after which it ran bi-monthly until # 5 in May 1973.
