Emma Willard was born in Conecticut, in America. By the tender age of 16yo, Emma became a teacher (1803). Four years later (1807) at age 20yo, Emma was Principal of a Girls' Academy. At age 27yo, Emma opened her own boarding school.

Emma had her own ideas for the education of young women. She submitted (1819) to the New York State Legislature her "Plan for Improving Female Education" which appealled for State aid in founding schools for girls and for equal education opportunities. This was rejected.

Emma travelled throughout the American states (1845-1847) counselling in education. Emma was one of the two American representative at the World's Education Convention in London, England (1854). Emma wrote several widely used textbooks on education and also wrote a volume of poetry.
