~LORD
OF THE RYE~
You know that song "If a body catch a
body comin'
through the rye"? I'd like-' 'It's
"If a body meet a
body coming through the rye"!' old
Phoebe said. 'It's
a poem. By Robert Burns.' 'I know it's a
poem by
Robert Burns.' She was right, though. It is
'If a body
meet a body coming through the rye'. I
didn't know it
then, though 'I thought it was "If a
body catch a
body",' I said. 'Anyway, I keep
picturing all these
little kids playing some game in this big
field of rye
and all.
Thousands of little kids, and nobody's around - nobody big, I mean -
except me. And I'm standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do,
I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff- I mean if they're
running and they don't look where they're going I have to come out from
somewhere and catch them. That's all I'd do all day. I'd just be the catcher in
the rye and all. I know it's crazy, but that's the only thing I'd really like
to be. I know it's crazy.'
Directions:
Welcome to Lord of
the Rye! The object of this game is to
rescue Piggy, Simon, Ralph, Sam, and Eric, some of our favorite characters from
Lord of the Flies, from falling off the cliff in the field of rye that Holden
Caufield discusses in Catcher in the Rye.
To accomplish this, the players must answer questions after landing on
the various children's places. The dice
is rolled, and the appropriate spots are moved. If the player lands on one of the character's spots, a question
on the material from Catcher in the Rye is asked and if answered correctly, the
player receives a card with the character's name on it and continues moving
throughout the board. Although some
characters have multiple spots on the game board, the winner must have one card
from EACH character.
Rules:
1. After answering
a question, the card must be placed at the bottom of the pile in the center of
the board.
2. The player
answering the question may not look at the answers and if this occurs a new
card is drawn and the first one is put at the bottom of the deck.
3. A player may only receive a character card
if he/she answers their question correctly.
4. If players make it around the whole board
without collecting all of the character cards, the player must begin from start
again.
