Ingles Empresarial is an exiting place to work. We provide English teachers to our clients at their place of business. Please be advised that we do not hire over the Internet, but are pleased to have a personal interview in our office in San Jose, with people who are interested in visiting Costa Rica with a view to working and/or studying Spanish.
Sincerely,

Where: San José, Costa Rica. When: Throughout the year How Long: Minimum 5-month commitment. What: Teaching adults in companies - "on-site". Who: NATIVE English speakers (preferrably North American). Previous ESL/EFL education/teaching experience an asset. Spanish language proficiency not necessary. The reason that we specify native English speakers is that our clients demand that we send them native speakers.
General Company Information: Inglés Empresarial is an English Language Training company based in San José, Costa Rica. We have been working specifically with corporate clients since 1993 Our E.F.L. teachers give "on-site" classes to executives and employees of all English language levels. We currently have about 25 teachers giving classes in 40 different companies. We have recently opened a new service called "English Express" to give classes to people at their homes. Although we teach English, we do not have a "school" as such, since we go into companies in the San Jose area and teach "on-site".
What we can offer our teachers: We offer part-time teaching positions, usually 8-15 hours per week (more in some cases). Our pay rate is from U.S. $6 - $8/hour (teaching time only, not travel time or expenses) depending on teacher performance, and client location. This is very good pay by local standards, but is not usually enough to completely support oneself . Many of our teachers are here to study Spanish, attend university, etc., or they teach private classes and at institutes to fill in their schedules. We provide initial training to familiarize new teachers with our systems, and on-going training to keep everyone up to date. Our teachers also enjoy: · free international mail services, · free internet access, · free fax reception, · free introductory and intermediate level Spanish lessons, · monthly seminars and "pizza" nights, · great letters of recommendation for good teachers.
For those who need it, we can help find accommodations with a Costa Rican family (about $250-$300/month including 2 meals, private room, and laundry).
Course descriptions: In all of our courses we emphasize the "communicative approach", focusing on conversation. We use texts and work books, have a set time schedule, and encourage teachers to use their imagination as much as possible. A typical class is 4-5 hours per week, usually split between two evenings (Mon./Weds or Tues./Thurs.). Class sizes are from 1 to 12 students, with an average of 5-6 students per class.
Our most popular course is "General English" with emphasis on conversation. This course has 4 levels, and each level takes 4-6 months to complete (depending on class size, ability, and number of hours taught/week). For the more advanced levels we use also cassettes and videos when applicable. Additionally, we offer Business English, conversational and intensive English courses.
What Costa Rica can offer: Costa Rica is a beautiful country located in Central America between Nicaragua and Panama. It is a true democracy, has no army, and is quite safe. The climate is tropical, but in San José it averages in the mid 70's most of the year. It has two seasons, dry (from December to about April), and rainy (from May to November). San José is in the middle of the country, about 2 hours drive from both coasts. The beaches are fantastic, as are the rainforests and mountains. It is one of the Eco-tourism capitals of the world. For more information see www.incostarica.net
Cost of Living and Living Arrangements: Costa Rica is quite an advanced country, but it is still considered third world, and it is more expensive to live here than people expect. Please ensure that you have enough money with you to get through the first three or four months while you are getting settled into living and working here in San Jose.
There are many options for living arrangements. You can live in a room with a Costa Rican family ($200-$300 per month, 2 meals and laundry included), rent a room in a shared house with other foreigners (about $180/month), or rent an apartment (they start at about $250/month).
Hiring procedures: If you are interested in a position with us, we would very much like to hear from you. You can either e-mail or fax us your résumé, and we can keep in touch by e-mail. PLEASE BE ADVISED THAT WE DO NOT HIRE STAFF OVER THE INTERNET. If you wish to come to Costa Rica to work with us, you must come in person for an interview.
Legalities: Getting working papers for Costa Rica is very difficult unless you marry a Costa Rican citizen, invest a lot of money here, or are brought in by a very large company to fulfil a need that no Costa Rican is qualified for. Unfortunately this leaves the majority of English teachers out of luck. However, in reality, this is not a big problem. A large percentage of the people teaching English here are foreigners working "illegally" on a regular tourist visa. To date, immigration authorities have not paid any attention to this, and as long as the person is not openly announcing that he/she is working, there are no problems. In the years we have been in operation, we have never had an incident with our foreign teachers. What we suggest is that when you come into the country, you say you are a tourist, and get the standard 3-month tourist visa. At the end of the 3 months you can either leave the country for 72 hours (Nicaragua or Panama) and re-new your visa for another 3 months, or you can overstay your visa and pay a small fine when you do decide to leave the country (about $50-$60). Either way is perfectly acceptable with us.
Thank you for your interest, and if we can be of any service to you, please contact us:

WHAT EMPLOYEES HAVE SAID:
"May 31, 2000: I worked for Ingles Empresarial for nine months as a teacher in several different companies at various levels. All my experiences here have been extremely valuable and rewarding. The training I received at the beginning was very practical and useful. I was very impressed by the monthly on-going training sessions and the respect and unity among all the teachers. I had observed other English operations and Ingles Empresarial was by far the most professional in all aspects. The pay was good and my advancement was fast. I also felt the quality and dedication of the teachers created a wonderful work environment. My experiences teaching have made my time in Costa Rica very special. My students were all very highly motivated and very special people. Their advancements were very rewarding. I feel very fortunate to have been able to teach here in Costa Rica for such a great company with such great people. Sincerely, Anna Marie Bikowski".
"6-12-00: Those who can….teach with Ingles Empresarial. My name is Ben Yackley and I was a teacher with Ingles Empresarial for almost a year. At Ingles Empresarial, I teach dedicated professionals who are committed to learning English. The students, who are all adults, come to class motivated and eager to learn. I travel to their place of business and work with small groups of about 4 - 10 students, which is, for me, a perfect learning environment that encourages active participation. At Ingles Empresarial, I get to choose the amount of hours I want. The regular training sessions and teacher meetings at Ingles Empresarial are great for getting new, creative ideas and for meeting other teachers. Ingles Empresarial is perfect for those who love teaching and having freedom to be creative in the classroom and for those who love working with dedicated students".
July 28/2000 Dear Future IESA/SIESA teachers: My name is Kelly and I work for Ingles Empresarial here in Costa Rica. Since starting with David three years ago I have taught adult students English at their various workplaces. I have taught all levels from "real" and "false" beginners (my favorite) to the more advanced students. I have worked with highly motivated and not-so-motivated students. Through my many experiences I have gained many skills including classroom and time management, planning and executing an interesting lesson plan, but more than anything, it has been a fun and growing experience as a teacher. I feel that teaching with IESA here in beautiful Costa Rica would be an excellent first job for anyone just receiving their TEFL/TESL certificate, as well as being a great experience for the more experienced teachers, because, as we all know, we never stop learning. I am looking forward to working with you. Kelly Echeverria.
