According to Greek mythology, Apollo the sun god was good friends with a boy named Hyacinthus. Apollo would supposedly descend to earth in a golden chariot to meet with his friend. One day the two were competing to see who could throw a discus the furthest. Zephyrus, the god of wind was watching them. He was jealous of their friendship, and plotted his revenge. When Apollo launched the disc into the air, Zephyrus blew the West Wind, pushing the disc off course, and causing it to hit Hyacinthus in the head, killing him. Apollo, grief-stricken by his friend's death, created Hyacinths out of the blood that was shed. He hoped that this would preserve the memory of his friend. |
