Springfield Spirit vs. Houston
Stealth
Mohegan Sun Arena, CT - 2/02/03
The more anticipated game ended up as most of the UConn
Huskies games. The Spirit won against Houston by 21 points, 73-52.
After watching a great performance by Diana Taurasi and her teammates
on Saturday game at Duke, I was feeling a little bored at Mohegan
Sun.
I did not expect Cheryl Swoopes missing so many shots,
and the absence of Tina Thompson made a difference as well. Don't
take me wrong, I was happy to see the Spirit won, but I would rather
see a more competitive game! Tamicha Jackson performed well, but she
was playing a one woman show. I guess even Van Chancellor could not
Sue played a decent game, but she had a lot of turnovers,
which is unusual for a great ball handler like her. I'm sure she will
get better as the season progresses. Swin Cash did not play as well
as I expected, but managed to score 12 points and did a great job
on defending Cheryl Swoopes. She took outside shots more than crashing
the board like what we used to seeing her play. Anyhow, my main reason
for being there was to observe how the first day of spirit sponsorship
goes. The Company I work for, Macena Systems sponsors one of the shoot
out contests. I think it was a great exposure, since the announcer
mentioned our company name repeatedly, and I was able to see the logo
flashing on the scoreboards during the shootout.
Our seats were better than expected, so I was able to
take some pictures during the game. Mohegan Sun definitely has a better
lighting than the Western New England College, where I could not take
any action shots. However, this time I did not have any luck after
the game. Only certain ticket holders were allowed to be in the arena
for an autograph session. I was not looking for autographs, but it
would be nice to hang around and let my camera do the talking.
We finished watching the game and got kicked out from
the arena early enough for us to walk around. I am not a gambler,
so I did not even try to make an attempt on that, especially that
one of the security guards actually requested me to show my ID to
get into the casino.
