2002 ESPN.COM CHAT TRANSCRIPT

ESPN 2002
Chat wrap: Sue Bird
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bird has led UConn to two straight Final Four bids.
Welcome to ESPN.com's moderated chat room. On Thursday, March 14, UConn Husky senior point guard Sue Bird stopped by to take your NCAA Tournament questions in chat.
Bird and her teammates are 33-0 heading into the tournament and will begin their drive for a third national championship on Thursday at home against St. Francis, champion of the Northeast Conference.

Bird is a two-time winner as the nation's best point guard, a finalist for this year's Naismith award, and the Big East Player of the Year. She ranked second in the Big East in assists (5.8 per game) and 11th in scoring (13.9 points per game).

The following is a transcript of the March 14 chat:

Sue Bird: I am here and ready to go!!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pakboy: What will it take for you to win this year's championship?

Sue Bird: We basically just have to keep playing the way we have been. We ended the Big East tourney on a good note and want to keep that going.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Indiana: Who would you like to play the most in the tourny?

Sue Bird: There is no one team, Every team will be tough because this IS the NCAA tourney. Whoever comes our way we will face.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kim, Sacramento: What advice would you give to players who are in the tournament for the first time?

Sue Bird: First I would say try not to get caught up in all the hype which is tough to do. Approach all the games the say way but play them all like it is your last.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Husky Fan in North Carolina: If you could guest star on any television show which one would it be?

Sue Bird: I would probably say the Sopranos, Sex and the City or Seinfeld!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joe (Albany): Does it sometimes get boring beating everyone by 30-40 points night in and night out?

Sue Bird: It doesn't get boring because the amount we beat teams by just shows how hard we work and how willing we are to sacrifice to reach our goals.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
fan: Hey Sue! How are you? I would like to know what you think of your first round matchup?

Sue Bird: We haven't really scouted them yet. I don't know much, I know the conf. they play in and that they are their conf. champs so you have to give them respect for that.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Diana(New Joisey): Hi Sue! i'm a HUGE fan ofyours, I'm in Chemistry and I don't think my teacher would let me go to the library for this chat, soo i'm going to submit this before hand. okay,now-What do you think of beign drafted #1? thanks! Good Luck in the NCAA!

Sue Bird: It's kind of cool to hear the talk but you have to take it with a grain of salt. That is over a month away and I'm not really concerned about it right now. It will take care of itself. I'm trying to have fun in college while I can!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mike in Storrs: What is your favorite midnight snack?

Sue Bird: Chocolate chip cookies .. slice and bake straight out of the oven ..

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pittsburgh: Hey Sue, I was wondering what is it like living with some of your teamates?

Sue Bird: It's a fun situation because I live with three other people who are going through the same exact thing as me. We have our own rooms this year which makes it more fun.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Brian Riden Tucson, AZ: Sue, Thanks for taking the time to do this. I've been watching UConn games for over 5 years now and for this year it seems like when I sit down to watch the games (which in Arizona is only ESPN/ESPN2 games) I expect you to blow out whoever you're playing. I know that as the players you can't overlook anyone but do you think anyone is capable of beating you when you're playing at your you best, or even playing a good game?

Sue Bird: Just because of the way we have played all year and the confidence we have, if we are playing our A game it is difficult to beat us. The other team would have to play above their A game. If we are off our game, there is no reason we can't be upset.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Huskieshoops10: Hey Sue!! Congrats on everything so far this year. I've noticed that in games your hair is curly but when you wear it down, it's straight. Is your hair naturally curly and if so, do you straighten it? Good luck the rest of this season!!! GO HUSKIES!!!

Sue Bird: Yes!!! Thank you for writing. It is naturally curly but I don't like it that way when it's down so I straighten. It takes a lot of time so I don't do it for games.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Laura (Edmonton,Alberta,Canada) : Sue, congragulations on your achievments and UCONNs. I was just wondering what do you think makes a great point guard? (like your self)

Sue Bird: Well, I think the first thing is you have to be somebody your teammate can respect, that makes your job easier. You can always be a leader that way. And you have to have confidence in your own game. And be aggressive!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UConn Fanatic: If UConn does not win the NCAA Tournament would you still consider the season a success?

Sue Bird: I think to go undefeated and win the conf. tournament makes it successful. But we are still looking at the big goal. Without a championship it would still be a success but we would still be disappointed.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rick in Boston: What is your most embarrasing basketball moment?

Sue Bird: We played La Tech last year on the road and I got my show just thrown .. I mean blocked really bad and it was on ESPN. That was pretty embarassing. I'm a little guard so I can't get too upset about it I guess!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
John, Branford, CT: Sue, How do you think UCONN will do next year without you, Aisha, Tamika, and Swin?

Sue Bird: Right now, without us our team is sophomores and freshman so they are a very young team. The way Diana and Jessica and the rest of them have been playing of late, with the new freshman they can be just as successful as us. It will take some adjusting though.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
UCmaniac: Is it true that you tan everyday??

Sue Bird: NO, NOT TRUE .. I only go when Morgan Valley drags me.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pman, new york: Whats the deal with Morgan Valley's injury? When will she be back?

Sue Bird: Her injury, I think she is out for the remainder of this year but she is getting better. It's something with her feet. Look for her next year though.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Big Fan: who do you think will win the men's tournament

Sue Bird: What's up Big Fan!! UConn of course!!! I'm definitely cheering on my fellow Huskies and I hope they go all the way.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BZ in Maumee: Where do you see yourself 10 years from now?

Sue Bird: Hmmm.. Hopefully still in the WNBA, hopefully married with two kids.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jen (CT): Since the team is so awesome and unstoppable, how does everyone stay focused everyday at practice day in and day out and for the games?

Sue Bird: It's not difficult. Coach always finds a way to present us with new challenges. He keeps it very interesting and we always want to get better.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Cort: How much pressure does the team feel from the media to win the tournament, or do you guys try to ignore the media?

Sue Bird: Yeah, a little bit. They are setting us up for a big fall, making it seem like we are this big favorite. If we don't win it's a bigger story than if we did. But you try not to let it affect you.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JP: What WNBA team would you like to play for

Sue Bird: As long as I'm playing it doesn't matter where.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Angel: What keeps you motivated? Did you ever doubt coming back from your knee injury?

Sue Bird: Hey Angel .. just wanting to succeed and wanting help my teammates. I never had any doubt that I would come back. having that mindset is what allowed me to come back as successfully as I did.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
BIRD FAN: Hey Sue I am seriously your biggest fan ever! I have been following u since u were a freshman! So it looks like Swin has got some MAD HOPS> can she dunk? and if so do me a favor and tell her to throw one down every once and a whille. Aight> good luck in Texas

Sue Bird: Thanks for writing Bird Fan .. yes, Swin does have some ups. If she really practiced it she could dunk but she will never do it for us. Only on occassion will she try for us. But I'll tell you even you want her to try it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sue's biggest fan: How did you feel about when ESPN asked you to do "college sportscentury" on you? Good Luck!!!!

Sue Bird: At first I didn't even realize what it was but when I found out I thought it was cool. It was a lot of fun and glad I had the opportunity to do it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Randy (Plymouth,CT): How does it feel to be the player of the year? And thanks for the great season UCONN has had!!!

Sue Bird: It feels good and weird at the same time. It is something any one of my teammates could be called. But it's a really nice accomplishment.

Sue Bird: Thanks for all of you who asked questions, hopefully I'll catch up with you guys in San Antonio!!!

Take care.
