Assistant Specialist (Soil Fertility), Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences, College of Tropical Agriculture & Human Resources (CTAHR), University of Hawai'I at Manoa

Position #83304, 11 months tenure track, extension, research, and instruction, to begin approximately 2003 April.

Duties and Responsibilities: The incumbent is expected to develop a strong extension and research program, related to soil nutrient management in integrated cropping systems. A close collaboration is expected between the incumbent and statewide personnel in developing a program that emphasizes soil nutrient management as related to tillage practices, integrated crop management, land use, and soil productivity. The collaboration is expected to include the critique and knowledge support of web-based decision-aids that assist in state and regional nutrient management.

Knowledgebase support includes collaborative approaches to estimating fertilizer calibration and estimates of soil critical levels and buffer coefficients. Collaboration is expected to include support of the Agricultural and Diagnostic and Service Center's activities and network. Nutrient management should include management for crop production, environmental health, economic viability, use of animal waste, and bioremediation. Interactive and cooperative leadership is expected in working with other extension specialists, research faculty, and agents to plan, coordinate, and deliver integrated state-wide extension, research, and education programs related to nutrient management. The incumbent is expected to develop a strong, working relationships with the agricultural industry, researchers, other Specialists, County Agents, and Clients. The incumbent is also expected to develop an extramurally-funded scholarly research program that could include nutrient management, tillage, crop management, or land use and soil productivity.

The incumbent is expected to teach an introductory soils course and assist or teach a graduate course, and advise graduate students. Undergraduate students should be involved in various ways such as directed studies and projects. Scholarly activity is expected and can be defined as creative, intellectual work such as course, curriculum development, peer-reviewed publications, research grants and collaborative activities that are validated by peers and clients.

Minimum Qualifications: PhD in Agronomy, Crop or Soil Science or closely-related field with specialization, experience in soil or nutrient management. Research background in crop and soil management as related to tillage, integrated crop management, land use and soil productivity. Knowledge of statistics, experimental design, and familiarity with geospatial methods is required. Ability to locate, synthesize, organize, and communicate information by both oral and written means. Ability to stimulate learning and provide leadership in learning activities and use information delivery systems (web pages, electronic, media, video, press releases and other information supply methods).

Desirable qualifications: Evidence of training or experience in soil fertility management. Practical experience in integrated crop nutrient management for crop production, bioremediation, economic viability and environmental health. Ability to collaborate and provide leadership with diverse industry and academic colleagues. Familiarity and skill with, soil and plant analyses, geospatial and computer-intensive statistical procedures, and remote-sensing. Ability to apply computer skills to extension and instruction. Ability to compete for extramural funds. Ability to attract and work with graduate students.

Salary: Dependent upon qualification and experience.
