Reading

    1. Mrs. Sally McGee is a teacher in Missouri. She is 50 years old, and she is only now using the Internet. Seeing only men talk about it on television, the Internet "didn't  seem to be an interesting thing for a woman," she said. It was only when her children left home for college that she decided to get an Internet account. She and other women are bringing millions more of American women online. This is helping to balance the gender difference among U.S. Internet users.

    2. Women now make up half the U.S. Internet population, up from about 40% in 1996 and 30% two years before. According to researchers at Jupiter Communications, that's nearly 61 million American women online. McGee doesn't only use e-mail. Last fall, she began surfing the Web to buy airlines tickets. This summer, she went on the Internet to find a swimming pool for her backyard.

   3. "I'm beginning to think this Bill Gates is really right, that the Internet is going to be an important part of our lives one day," MeGee said. To researchers, the fact that women like McGee can use the Internet is proof that it has become an important part of American life. "It's become more practical," said Anita Allen-Castellito, a professor who studies gender on the Internet. "It's taken a long time for the Internet to become more useful for people to do ordinary things."

    4. The way people use the Internet is changing. In the past, the people who created the Internet worked in government and education, and worked in fields of technology that were controlled by men. At that time, computer tools were often difficult to use, and the Internet was hard to navigate. However, men didn't worry about using complicated machines because they liked them. Women just didn't have the patience, said Nancy Evans, co-founder of the women's Web site iVillage.

    5. Women got used  to technology when tools got better and sites became more useful."For women, it's not about sitting at a computer,"said Stacy Elliott, a Microsoft manager who studies how women use technology."It's about the benefits. "As friends told friends, the number of women and girls using the Internet increased quickly. "Looking back to 1995, I don't know anyone who predicated we would have made this kind of increase in five years," said  Adam Powell, a technology expert in Washington.

    6. About one-fifth of the increase in women's Internet use comes from women over age 50, many of whom went online for health research, according to one study. "The Internet has begun to look a lot like the rest of America," said  Lee Rainie, who directed the study. "In the early days, it was a unique, special group of people who used the Internet. Now everyone is using it."

    7. Worldwide, it may require longer to close the gender gap, researchers say. Men currently make up 59% of the online population worldwide, according to a March survey of 34 countries by the Augus Reid Group in Vancouver, British Columbia. Women still lag in many poor countries, but their numbers are increasing in such rich nations as Australia and the Netherlands.

    8. One study found that U.S. women use the Internet less frequently than men. They also use it in different ways. Women like the Internet for communication: 65% of new female Internet users think e-mail is necessary for their lives, compared with 55% of men. Women are also more likely than men to enjoy the Internet because it makes it easy to keep in contact with friends and family. The study findings also show that women are willing to change themselves to fit the online world as the Internet changes. Researchers are also trying to find better ways to get poor and non-white groups online. The experience with women suggests that once sites improve, the Internet will be useful for both genders and all races.
