NEPENTE
COLOMBIA
How and why rise the idea of making a Death Metal band?
In 2002, three of the current members of the band (Juan Pablo, Mauricio and Wilmar)
had in mind an instrumental project but they wanted to give more power to their music
bringing a vocal. Then, José Fernando Ospina entered as the new vocalist of the band.
After a year of fitting together, the guitarist Esteban Daza joined the band bringing
more aggressiveness to their sound and defining musically the band into the Death-Black
Metal style.
Nepente decided to focus on this kind of metal due to the few bands that had presented
this type of musical fusion. Besides, all of the members are fans of Death and Black Metal.
How comes the name: NEPENTE?
It comes from an elixir best known in the Homeric poems, which effect is oblivion.
This elixir was only given to gods, conceding them this way, supremacy over human
kind by means of never feeling guilty or remorse. This image also appears in Edgar
Allan Poe and H.P Lovecraft’s works.
Within this name is represented the strength, power and nobility of men, and the
remote possibility of committing sin in the sense of Christianity.
Nowadays, who are NEPENTE?
Alignment since 2003:
José Fernando Ospina: Vocal
Esteban Daza: Guitar
Juan Pablo Buitrago: Guitar
Wilmar Correa: Bass
Macuricio Aristizábal: Drums
How long ago did the CD“Ascension” appeared?
8 months ago. In August 2005.
Was it difficult for you to bring out this production?
Actually, bringing out this kind of works by ourselves was really hard,
not only for us but also to those people who try the same. It demands
lots of sacrifice and dedication, from contacts and the economic support.
At this moment, we have not been sign up by any recording studio, nevertheless,
we thank to HATEWORKS, because of the recording, production and distribution
contacts. The Colombian recording studios have lots of troubles when developing
their work in a media like ours. But we hope to contact any recording studio
and sign in, as we improve, create and let you know our music.
The 5 songs that appear in the CD are written in English.
Which are the reasons you had to choose this language
and which are the thematic of the songs?
We considered that the kind of music we foster raises its sonority in this language,
and we can use less words and express more ideas in shorter sentences. Besides, through
English we can get to a wide audience.
Our lyrics express emotions and dark, thick and heartrending situations through
a very pictorial language that describes facts from real life and fiction.
Tell us about your musical and ideological influences
We do not follow any particular ideology, although our lyrics are quite influenced
by literature and fiction and horror movies.
Musically, we have a variety of influences, among them: from Death Metal (Deicide,
Napalm Death, Morbid Angel, Vader and Behemoth), from Black Metal (Marduk and Dark Funeral),
from Thrash (Slayer, Testament and Sepultura), from Old Guard (Black Sabbath and Motorhead)
and from Experimental music (Pink Floyd).
Tell us about the performances you have had and which has been the more memorable.
All our performances had been different, memorable and worthy. But we highlight
our performances next to Masacre (Pereira and Manizales), Neurosis (Manizales)
and the concerts in Bucaramanga and Bello (Antioquia) during the “Metal Assault Tour” in 2005.
What about your future plans?
We’ll publish our web page next month, recording a new album by the end of the year
and probably be part of a tour to the south of the continent.
Nowadays, how is Manizales’ scene?
It has recovered strength and power since more concerts had been carried out
and new bands with new proposals had appeared as Inner-hate, Tears of Glory,
Nocturnal Feelings and Seventh Race.
What is your opinion about drugs and musical phony?
We set aside our opinion about drugs. About musical phony of the national bands,
we believe is a FUCKING SHIT!
