Poetry as a Quilt
by Winnie Deng
I see poetry as a quilt.
Sewn with words and adorned with rhyme;
Interwoven with strings of lyrics and lines.
Embellished with similes and nifty metaphors;
While alliteration and imagery enhances it all the more.
And when all are combined, and a stanza is wrought;
A patch is developed, each with its own eloquent thoughts.
Then patch by patch, they are immaculately laced.
Until soon appears a blanket, of such elegance and grace.
And in this coverlet,
Shown is a display of enchanting fairytales.
Tales of love, tales of hate,
Tales and visions the mind can create.
And within the quilt, are hidden messages yet to be traced.
Where covert secrets, would be revealed.
Our deepest confessions are unveiled.
Shadowed pain, will unfold.
And most idyllic desires are told.
Derived from the roots of the imagination.
Built upon the heartfelt passion.
Inspired to live and embrace.
And created is this blanket,
Of which a poem is made.
