Some Firefly Fic I Like

This page is still incomplete. This was just all I managed to get up so far--I'm still working on it. And--please remember to send the authors feedback! Without generalizing overmuch, it's my experience that most authors absolutely *love* to get a note of any kind from someone who has read their work, and many appreciate critical feedback just as much as positive feedback, as long as it is considered and reasonable. So please send feedback if you can!

Of History—by Northlight

I adore all of Northlight's fic, but this one makes my teeth hurt and wish I could write like this. It is lyrical and wonderful and I cannot gush enough. A gorgeous look at Zoe and the men she loves.

Rara Avis—by Kirby Crow

This is the one fic that stays with me and rips my heart out every time I read it. Wash and Zoe, and the war they never discuss.

The Mess—by Maystone

I love pretty much anything Maystone writes—because Maystone is brilliant. However, this short little piece is my favorite. Sweet and funny and I can just *see* it, it's so Wash. Then you must read everything else she ever wrote.

Mood to Burn Bridges—by Sarahetc.

I think all of Sarah's writing is wonderful, but I especially like this piece-—a lovely recounting of how Wash might have navigated the Mal/Zoe relationship. Sarah writes the Wash I see on screen and love to pieces beautifully.

Dish Duty—by Nicole Clevenger

Nic writes a wicked River, and I am completely envious of her ability to get right into River's head—-but this Zoe story shows that she has a talent for getting into any character's head with ease and grace. An insightful, poignant contemplation of Zoe's thoughts after the events of War Stories.

Charmed Life--by Northlight

Northlight has a gift for painting gorgeous images, and this elegant, lush, poetic portrait of Inara is a perfect example, providing a believable and provoking perspective on a character that seems to be more of a cypher than any of the others. I'm usually a meat-and-potatoes type of fic connoisseur, but this stylistic little piece takes my breath away.

Girl—by Tara LJC

This fic I adore, it is so freaking perfect. A chilling, wrenching look at the Simon/River dynamic that is so real it hurts.

RSVP—-by Sarahetc.

This fic is possibly my favorite of all of Sarah's fics. The voices of Mal and Zoe are both bang-on, and while it seems to be all about Wash and Zoe and Mal's reactions to them, in reality, this is a brilliant character study that is not really about Wash and Zoe at all. A magnificent, heart-breaking look at Mal and the nature of love and freedom. Now go read all the rest of Sarah's fic. Go now.

Peanut Butter We Got--by Harriet Vane

This piece is just *so* sweet and simple and charming, it warms my heart and cheers me up with a delicate, subtle touch. It's a rare fic that can pull this kind of thing off without being sappy or over the top, and this one delivers in spades. Another River/Mal fic, with River dialogue that is exactly right.

Shivering--by Tam Cranver

An original, bittersweet look at Wash as he deals with his own trauma in the aftermath of War Stories, and at the meaning of courage and survival and love. Unfortunately, Tam only posts on fanfiction.net, as far as I've found, and so, you have to navigate the annoying pop-ups—but it's worth it. I promise.

Not Poaching—-by Defender82

Another take on Wash's navigation of Mal and Zoe's bond, this fic is an unusual characterization of the seemingly affable, easy-going pilot as he masterfully plots a campaign to both win Zoe and protect her, and illustrates just what everyone else might not get about Wash at first glance. While this is not necessarily the Wash I see, it's definitely a very interesting, marvellous version of the wise-cracking pilot. Defender's Wash is damn clever and arrogant but honourable and so in love, it makes me want to cheer, and his last line of dialogue is so lovely it's heart-breaking. Read it, and then read it's sequel "Not Sharing".

Filament Series—by LemonLashes

I am really not a fan of slash unless it is supported by canon, and I don't see it in Firefly. However this dark and angsty and wrenching fic is all AU but completely in keeping with the show, and made me believe. Plus, the last story in the series--Powder Burns--has a fantastic Wash/Zoe scene in it. Of all my fic recs, I'm also going to reiterate that there is an NC-17 warning on this one, just for the nature of the content.

Christmas on Serenity--by Corielle

This was one of the first fics I read, and it's sweet, sparkling fun. An Xmas tale.

Lex Talionus--by Tara LJC

Oh my God. This is a brilliant story, long and satisfying, intricately plotted and amazing. It's engaging, it's angsty, it's stunning. It's everything I like about fic, and then some.

The Fair—-by Maystone

Maystone has a wonderful take on all the characters, and a fondness for two word titles :-). This one is a splendid slant on Mal and Inara and their complicated relationships.

Turn of the Wheel--by Hawkmoth

A speculative fic about what could be--a grimly honest, yet hopeful possibility for the future.

Suspended—by Eleanor K.

Sweet, with a hint of slash, a post Out of Gas—one of my favorite codas to this ep. There's a sequel, too.

Babysitter—by Dex

Yes, yes, I really *do* read about the other characters, now and again—and this is a very sweet River and Mal interaction that is plausible, engaging, and insightful.

Passenger—by Harriet Vane

I really enjoyed this fic, which transposes Greek myth onto the crew for a fun yarn. Somewhat uneven, but very interesting and some extremely astute insights into the characters at times, and the relation to the classical myth *totally* works. (It's completed, the link above is just for the first chunk, though.)

Glass Walls--by Ana

Jayne and Simon are imprisoned in a hellish prison camp, and yet survive all the same, in this dark, tense, intriguing tale.

The Old Yeh Shen Story--Tara LJC

Another novella by Tara, again with the amazing and brilliant. Saying more is redundant--go, go, read! :-)

Please Note: The above fics are in no particular order. For ease, the majority of links are to the Firefly's Glow archive, and failing that the Fireflyfans.net archive, unless the fic was not available there, even though most of these authors have their own pages too. Also, these fics are just what *I* like, and I am biased. Very. And while I may think that the fics I like are brilliant, and I do, I don't necessarily need noble, tasteful, or even rational reasons, and you may disagree with my choices. Please feel free to do so ... Last Updated: Summer, 2003
