Not-So-Random Links
Here are some links and assorted sites, including places I go and people I like.
The X-Files, my first and dearest love
1. Maybe Amanda's Better Virtual Living: My good friend's Maybe Amanda's site is quite simply one of the best places on the web. Complete with its own religous order, full of fic and games and even recipes, and the only place you will find order forms for the first, original, and still the most cutting-edge cloning company. Plus her fic will make you gasp and cry and stalk her. Beautifully designed, brilliant and completely mad, it's a tremendous resource. Here be dragons, or the most comprehensive archive of X-Files fic on the web. Mostly everything is here: Good, incredible, and incredibly bad. Also, all the good links to mostly everywhere. Simply known as the Haven, this site has always been THE place to discuss, disseminate, and deify the show, the fic, fic writers, and life in general. 4. The Annex: If you're looking for something a little longer, a little more absorbing ... the novel archive is the place to find it. Many of these stories have dustjackets, little author notes, and have been formatted specially for printing out in hard copy. Perfect for a lazy Sunday morning read over coffee. 5. The Hub: An older site, but if you want more links ... this is a good place to go. 6. Pellinor's Deep Background: Another older site, but still a wonderful resource for the X-F fic--or any--writer. 7. WhyIncision: Not just a clever name, this has got my vote for best mailing list. Not your regular discussion list; it's like being part of an intelligent, interesting, fun, and thought-provoking bookclub which is all about the best of X-F fic, and celebrates both reading and writing in general while it's at it. I can't imagine the work it would take to run this list--the listmoms have both my respect and awe. An older love, faithful and true ... Star Wars
Probably my favorite site for Star Wars 'fic, it's got a fabulous selection of stories as well as a very complete selection of links ... The Soul of the Jedi's Writer's Retreat is a fabulous board, and my haunt of choice. The Challenges are loads of fun, and I try to post something in 'em as often as I can (N.B. I post under "Ariadne" on this board). Good site, good 'fic, fine links, great list ... 4. Fanfix: The Star Wars Fan Fiction Library is one of the most comprehensive archives for SW 'fic on-line. They do, however, restrict their fic to those with a rating no higher than PG-13. A lovely place to find lots o' stuff. A lovely fic archive, with some exclusive fics. Don't forget its more mature sister site. A lovely little site, updated frequently, full of little extras.
Firefly, my passionate love affair
1. The Cortex: If it's worth reading, Tara will find it and place it on her both complete and discerning site. Most everything is here, including all the important links. I love a good challenge, although I can't always play. Some lovely little shippets, snippets, and short stories are created here every week. My friend and erstwhile co-writer Sarah's nutty site--tons of wacky fun. The often hi-larious and oft-intelligent alternative to the official Fox forum. Hate Fox if you will, you must visit their board where the pace is frantic, the news is breaking, and even the players drop in on occasion. The comprehensive fic archive for the fandom. Goofy fun. Coming soon. A fabulous 'fic writer's resource, with transcripts of the eps. A nice site and a good resource for most things, including links to pictures and galleries. And now for everything else ...
1. Another place about me--my infrequently updated LiveJournal. 2. Buffy and X-Files Fan Fiction Links. This site even has a title that is clear and easy to follow! Comprehensive and you'll be stunned at how many obscure speciality archives there are. Whatever you want to read in the X-F fic world, you'll find an archive full. Trust me. A mult-fandom site. A bit of a hodge-podge, you can always find some gold among the chaos here. And, if you are a fan of some other show, here's another great site for miscellaneous fanfic links and some good writer resources too. An older multi-fandom site. 5. Google: Just cuz it's so obvious. The search engine for everything. If you need to find it, and a search engnine isn't cutting it, this is the place. A comprehensive, sorted list of some of the best sites the web has to offer, help with your own page, net news, and much, much more. 7. ATXC The ATXC newsgroup--where it all began for me. which I don't know how to pull down or change, so there's a link here in case you want an outdated mirror. 9. The Wolverine and Rogue Fanfiction Library. I do have a bit of a weakness for X-Men movie fic, every now and again. 11. Tara's Useful Mandarin Redux Redux ... ...is exactly what the title says. Useful common phrases, good to throw in FF fic. If have a sense of humour, knowledge of the Lord of the Rings (more specifically the movies, not so much the books), and have read any Bridget Jones' ... oh. My. God. You must. Really, you must. The Secret Diaries are completely irreverant, so if you are a serious type purist, please avoid, but if not ... and please. These are not to be read while consuming food or drink. You've been warned. 13. And just for fun: COTSA
If you want to write fic and want more advice, The Writer's University is a repository of tips and articles by and for fanfic writers. While some it is extremely helpful, I don't always agree with the various tips and suggestions I've seen for writers (except for finding a good beta-reader--that is invaluable). And although I make no claim to knowing anything and have no illusions that my stuff is brilliant, I guess my advice would be if you want to write, figure out what you want to say and just write it. That's it. And, while I find it both helpful and interesting to read about how others write and while I love to discuss writing and the process of writing, I have also learned that no one writer writes exactly like another. Find your voice, or to heck with finding your voice. Write how and what you like. Just write. That's it. Enjoy all the delights sisterhood and a credit card can bring. |
