Exploring Business Opportunities in the Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BI-PV) Industry

Offered At
UCI

Course Description
The instructor of this seminar initiated an international photovoltaics (PV) industry development competition published in the World Renewable Energy Congress IV in June 1996. An historic milestone followed in 1997 with publication of the Implementation Plan for the Million Solar Rooftops in the United States by the Year 2010 Program, and a similar program published by the European Commission. These programs represent a potential twenty billion dollars of global silicon commerce. This seminar explores the business opportunities in the photovoltaics industry with an overview of related technology, products and the steps needed to design a basic PV system. The focus is on building--integrated photovoltaic systems (BI-PV). A design exercise provides participants with an opportunity to develop a cost estimate for systems of up to 10 kilowatt peak and to complete an application for the California Energy Commission's 50% Buydown Program. BI-PV systems for commerical and industrial electricity generation are described. These systems may be used to supplement the electricity needs of a building or to sell electricity as an Energy Service Provider. This intensive photovoltaics technology study is enhanced by product exhibits, Internet demonstrations and workbook exercises. Recommended prerequisite: Be Your Own Electricity Provider: Building-Integrated Photvoltaic (BI-PV) Systems for Industrial, Commercial and Residential Applications, Social Ecology 814.3, or equivalent experience.
