    Yahoo!GeoCities... smooth sailing ahead!

YAHOO!GeoCities has finally completed the merger of the systems and the GeoCities tools are pretty much back online. You may notice some changes, the file manager now sports a new look although it's functions remain intact. The file manager area is now stable and ready for use. As this is a work in progress you will begin to see new tools and toys being added for our enjoyment. One of the only noticed errors has been in the banner server, and who really likes the banners anyhow! I'm sure by judging the current smoothness of the system the banner issue will also be resolved soon!

If you still have not gone through the re-registration process, we urge you to do it now. The longer you put this off, the less likely you will be able to retain your membername and you will not be able to access your file directory or other tools. If you are unsure of how to complete this process, contact your CL for detailed instructions and assistance.

Since this phase has come to an end we can begin watching with anticipation for new tools and services to be introduced. We will emphasize some of the latest additions in this months issue.

Have you got an idea for a news article, or have you posted some information regarding business, web page building, or other related topic you would like covered in our newsletter?

We would love to hear from you and include your ideas in our newsletter. To submit information or article to this newsletter please use the Contact Editor form.

We are particularly interested in tutorials, graphic resources, web publishing tips, JavaScript Apps and other tools that would be of interest to our readership.

    Introducing New Tools

YAHOO! has introduced us to a whole new series of tools, many of them integrated. The intent of these tools is to combine all of your online and browsing capabilites, plus provide useful tools for planning, organizing, and file storage.

In this issue we will cover some of the tools, how to use them, where to get them, how to configure them for your own personal use. We think you will appreciate the convenience these tools have to offer and how user-friendly the set-up and use can be. Who can resist putting all of their online interests at their fingertips, and having everything they need only a mouse click away?

    Need Extra Storage Space?

NEW TOOL    YAHOO!Briefcase offers just that, an additional 10 megs of storage space. It's more than just storage, you can select to keep your storage space private, allow everyone access to it, or allow a select group of friends to access your briefcase. The briefaces can handle most file formats (including MP3). It's default is two folders, one for images the other files, but you can create and rename folders. Each folder can be edited for accessibility so you can save sensitive files while still sharing family photos or other files with friends.

To get your own YAHOO!Briefcase Click Here and simply sign in using your Y!GC membername. This automatically sets up your briefcase and it's ready for use. To add files simply click the "Add File" icon, to edit a file click the pencil icon, to delete a file use the garbage can icon. In the upper right corner are the icons for adding a new file or album.

To set up your files for public, private, or invitational only viewing click on the "Edit" tool while in the "Folders List" area and select how you wish to use this folder or album. Only Yahoo! Members can access this area if you wish to create a friends only area, you must provide their Yahoo! membername, separated by commas, in a list to provide them this filtered access.

    Good Luck & Happy Storage!

    Friends & Companions

NEW TOOL    YAHOO!Companion is the perfect companion if you are involved in Y!GC. Companion simply adds a tool bar to your IE4x browser to enable you to integrate your Yahoo! tools. Companion allows you to check your mail or receive mail alerts and compose with a single mouse click on the browser toolbar... no matter what page you are currently viewing in your browser. Companion keeps your Clubs organized, brings you news and entertainment and more.

Companion has it's preset option, but allows you to custom configure your tool bar set up with the features and order you prefer. It even has it's own Bookmarks area and built in Search tool. Anytime you wish to edit the tool bar simply click the edit button on the bar and it will send you back to the configuration page.

To get your own Yahoo!Companion Click Here, read the TOS and if you agree by those terms select "I Accept, Activate Now" and this will activate the setup. It will first open a new window, then prompt you to select how you want to set up your Companion Browser tool - Sampler, Living, Entertainment, Business, Communities, or Make My Own - make your selection then click the "Finished" button. The next step offers you the categories and subjects you wish to add to the Companion. If you wish to change the order in which they appear on the toolbar select "Change Layout", make your personal modifications by simply moving your selected subject up and down the list. When complete click "Finished" and it will install the bar on your browser.

Included in the options are the "Sign Out" tool. If you have more than one Y!GC account I would recommend adding this tool and configuring your Companion for each ID you have, on Sign In it will configure the browser bar for that membername preference. The Companion makes moving between My Yahoo and Mail, then off to Clubs easy to manage. It puts these links at your fingertips and removes the need to store several locations in your Favorites file, freeing it up for other interests. Just remember, you can define bookmarks for each membername account by using the Y!Bookmarks tool in the Companion.

In the week that this tool has been put to the test, it appears stable and has not interfered with the other browser functions. I give it "two thumb up" for being useful and beneficial.

    Messages Boards ...

an old communications tool with a new look

     UPDATED TOOL
    By Lostinthought
    Eureka CL

Communications are vital to any society, and community bulletin boards have always been a mainstay for territorial information. On the Internet, despite the availability of high-tech communications tools, their importance has not diminished.

The new Ya!GeoCities Message Boards provide the same vital function to residents within the Ya!GeoCities neighborhoods. They provide a place where Homesteaders have the opportunity to pose and answer questions, share knowledge and learn.

Easily accessed from a central location, each neighborhood has its own board governed by the guidelines set forth by Ya!GeoCities - ultimately, the rules of good taste. Registration, a password, and acceptance of these Ya!GeoCities guidelines are required to post a message, but anyone can read the messages left there.

Since Yahoo! and GeoCities merged, the neighborhood message boards have experienced a sharp decline in the number of users. This could be contributed to the new URL (address) of the master list of community boards, which is not linked from the old and familiar GeoCities master listing. People are possibly confusing the neighborhood boards with the Yahoo! message boards which were left intact. GeoMarkk, producer of the neighborhood boards, indicated that there was no official statement concerning this matter, but did say, “We are peddling as fast as we can.”

    NEW GUESTBOOKS

A guestbook will allow you to track guests, view their comments on your page, and provides you with their URL's so you can visit their pages also. The Guestbook Set-Up is where you will find all the information you require to get started. They provide the option of styles and colors, provide you with the source coding and preset pages. Not unlike the former guestbook, but now with easier to manipulate options.

     SECURITY ISSUE

    Hotmail Users

If you use MSN's Hotmail you may have had your privacy violated, and your mail might have been made public. While it has been reported that Hackers had broken into the mail servers and could read any mailbox they desired, this is not entirely true. This didn't take any experienced hacker to achieve, the error was on the part of Hotmail.

Hotmail has been plagued with security issues from the beginning, this is just another incident. If you value the security of your e-mail correspondence you should read the ZDNet Report and decide whether you are willing to risk such a security breach again!

    Leaky Windows

Speculation abounds as to whether or not Microsoft is using a security key for NSA in it's Windows OS, this includes '95, '98, and NT. Read the ZDNet Report.

Microsoft is maintaining that this 'key' is encryption standard, but offers no other explaination.

    The Forgotten Neighborhood

     ARTICLE OF INTEREST
    By Lostinthought CL

When Yahoo! and GeoCities merged recently, their primary concern was for the Homesteaders and their home page sites, which is understandable. Many hours of work and planning went into those pages, and they pose a much needed advertising draw for the new affiliation. That was all well and good, but in the scheme of things, one very interactive neighborhood was forgotten, leaving its citizens dismayed and wandering - the GeoCities chat rooms.

The chat rooms were popular places for the gathering of friends. The discussions ran the gambit of interests. From romance to world affairs, everyone had input into the conversations. When the Ya!GeoCities, closed those chat rooms two weeks ago, they thought that the chatters would assemble in Yahoo Chat, but this has not been the case. The chatters feel displaced and are searching mostly to continue the friendships they came to appreciate while the rooms were open.

Au§§ieguy© is one of those chatters, and shared his thoughts which best sum the feelings of the majority of the detached neighborhood, "The GeoCities chat rooms, to a large extent, were places for escapism. They allowed us to be in a world where we had many friends, could laugh, joke and tease. Real life, for want of a better term, for some consists of loneliness. Some don’t have friends, nor laughter, and anyone with which to share emotions. GeoCities chat filled a void in all our lives".

Others who frequented the GeoCities chat rooms, came to relax from the tedium of work, and in sharing their frustrations, also found support and friendship. One of these chatters, gUtsY©, relates, "When I was down, the friends I made there lifted my spirits, and took my mind off my troubles. We had something there that I have not been able to find in any other chat rooms. It is sad that Yahoo! did not consider the human factor. Behind every keyboard, there are human beings with feelings."

An all-out effort to reunite the chatters is being lead by one Ya!GeoCities Community Leader who wishes to remain anonymous, "As a Community Leader I could not turn my back on these chatters. They messages to me have been heartbreaking. I could almost feel the tears in their words. Someone had to do something to help them, and I took on the job willingly as to be a good Community Leader, you must care for your community enough to lead it."

Founding a Yahoo Club for the chatter, this CL noted that within the first three days the membership rose from five to 61 members. "We expect many more chatters to join the club. I just hope that we can find them all. Most of the members are in the 30's age group. They all have a lot in common, and are bound by locality to their friendships. They have held two meetings already, and are in the process of organizing a overnmental structure for the club, consisting of two founders and a board of directors. I needed an additional founder who would be willing to take on some of the administrative duties. It was agreed by the membership that Au§§ieguy© should aid me, as he lives in Australia and is online at a different time of day from me and would be available should someone need his aid."

The CL continued, "I feel good about what I am doing to help the chatters, after all, that is what Community Leaders do for their community. I just wish the club was bigger to acomodate the entire membership, and hope that we don’t get deleted when we mail out our announcements of meetings. Yahoo! will do that for spaming, but we hope they realize that is not what we are doing. We are, however, looking into different methods of communication. What happens to the club remains to be seen, but we are off to a wonderful start."

     NOTICE

If you were a former chatter in the Eureka Chat you can find your old group in the new Rejects Restroom Club, your former group is looking forward to hearing from you again!

     NOT SO AMUZING

EBay has been a very controversial site from the beginning, and each posting is questionable regarding it's authenticity. We laughed when an award won by EBay but collected by an unrelated party was auctioned off on their own board (comically). We winced each time EBay's name appeared in the news announcing yet another online scam. The most recent is absolutely appalling... on the auction block "One Functioning Human Kidney". To date it has not been determined whether this was a bona fide offering (being illegal to sell body parts) or just a hoax to show how ridiculous EBay's site really can get.

EBay pulled the auction when bidding started to reach $6M U.S. and investigators have tracked it back to the source. No criminal charges have been laid at the time of this printing, but you can expect it. This was more than a mere prank, hundreds of people are on waiting lists for organ transplants and many are looking at getting to the head of the line. Many of those waiting for suitable donors will die waiting... this is where this where the frantic drive to obtain an organ (without confirming donor compatibility and the legalities) leaves desperate people to resort to bidding for what potentially could be the life-saving kidney they require.

Shame on EBay for not monitoring it's content, and worse yet, a curse on the household of the person who posted that - well, at least some severe charge or penalty should be in order.
