Here we go hopping - around the room On St. Valentine's day. Here are some assorted Valentine's Day ideas: LOVE BUG GAME Verse by Dick Wilmes Love bug, love bug Who do you see? I'll give you a big hug If you're pointing at me! Form a circle with one child in the middle. That child covers his eyes and points while slowly twirling around. Others say the thyme. The child uncovers his eyes and hugs the person he's pointing at. Alphabet Heart Mates Make a necklace for each child by cutting a heart shape out of posterboard, punching a hole in the top and tying on a loop of yarn. Divide the heart necklaces into pairs. On each pair print an upper-case alphabet letter and a matching lower-case letter. Give each child a necklace to put on. Help the children identify the letters on their necklaces. Then let them walk around to find their " alphabet heart mates." Variation: Write matching numerals on the pairs of necklaces. Or draw on matching shapes such as circles, squares and triangles. Jean Warren SWEETHEART DANCE Cut large heart shapes out of red, yellow and blue construction paper. Give each child one heart and have the children stand in a circle. Then sing the song below and have the children follow the directions. Tune: "Skip to my Lou" Red hearts, red hearts, take a bow Yellow hearts, yellow hearts, take a bow Blue hearts, blue hearts, take a bow Now all hearts jump up right now. Yellow hearts, yellow hearts touch the ground Blue hearts, blue hearts touch the ground Red hearts, red hearts touch the ground Now all hearts turn round and round. Blue hearts, blue hearts, wit right down Red hearts, red hearts, sit right down Yellow hearts, yellow hearts sit right down Now all stand and run to town! (run in place) Barbara Dunn I AM STUCK ON YOU Sung to: "The Mulberry Bush" Here is my valentine, My valentine, my valentine Here is my valentine I am stuck on you! Now we're stuck together Together, together Now we're stuck together We're one big valentine! by Jean Warren I play this as a group circle game. We sing the first verse and I call a child to come join me, as my "valentine." Sing the verse again and the child calls someone to join us. We circle around together, singing the verse and calling a child to come join us each time. When all are "stuck" we sing the last verse! (We kind of hold each other's waist and circle around as we sing) CAN YOU GUESS? This is similar to the "Doggie, Doggie" game. I usually divide the group into 2 so we have two smaller groups playing at the same time at different ends of the room. One child sits in a special chair, and closes her eyes. I give a paper valentine to one of the children and he or she hides it under the chair. We all say together:"Can you guess who was so kind, to bring you a pretty Valentine?" Then the child in the chair gets 3 "guesses" to guess who "gave" the valentine. Then the "giver" gets the next turn to sit in the chair. We take turns until everyone has had a turn. MUSICAL HUGS Play a peppy song. When the music stops you must give the person standing next to you a hug! FIVE LITTLE VALENTINES 5 little valentines waiting in the store ______________(Child's name) bought one, and then there were 4. 4 little valentines for you and for me ___________bought one, and then there were 3. 3 little valentines wondering what to do __________bought one, and then there were 2. 2 little valentines thinking up some fun _________bought one, and then there was one. 1 little valentine said, "Buy me and run!" ___________did that, and then there were none! I would "play" this as a circle game, using wrapped chocolate hearts for the valentines and repeat until everyone has one. 5 Little Hearts 5 little hearts, all in a row The first one said, "I love you so." The second one said, "Will you be my Valentine?" The third one said, "I will, if you'll be mine," The fourth one said, "I'll always be your friend." The fifth one said, "We'll all be friends until the very end." FIVE LITTLE VALENTINES Five little Valentines were having a race. The first one was all covered with lace. The second one had a funny face. The third one said, "I love you." The fourth one said, " I do too." The fifth one was sly as a fox, He ran the fastest to your Valentine box. idea that uses the fingerprints of the kids. You can use colored construction paper, cut into heart shape. Ink the childs thump and stamp it in the middle of the heart. Then you draw legs, arms and a smily face on My son and I are already doing some valentines art and craft ideas. (starting early because we will be out of town some next month) Anyway, yesterday we fingerpainted with red paint on posterboard. We figured out we could take one finger and print it in two slightly opposite angles, leaving a heart shape out of our finger print! They were cute. This would be a cute way to decorate a around a valentine poem or something.... We also took one sheet of pink construction paper, one piece of poster board w/ heart shape cut out in the center (poster board was slightly smaller than our constr. paper), glue poster board onto your constr. paper. Then take pieces of red tissue paper ( twist them, or wad them up) glue them around outline of the heart. By twisting and crumpling them it made them stand out when glued making a very nice outline around the heart.... In the heart my son chose to put stickers! But your children could place a picture of themself, a poem, draw a picture, etc, etc... Valentine Kisses Makes 4-6 6 cups Krispy Rice Cereal 1 pkg of marshmallows 3 Tbsp. margarine vegetable cooking spray Utensils and Supplies: Microwave oven Large micro-safe bowl funnel sprayed with cooking spray (approx. 4 1/2 in in diameter) 12" square of aluminum foil for each child 1" x 11" strip of paper per child waxed paper mixing spoon Label each strip of paper to say "A Kiss For You!". Follow directions on Krispie box for making treats, Allow the mixture to cool until easy enough to handle. Have children mold it in the funnel. Place on waxed paper to cool completely before wrapping. Wrap kiss and strip in aluminum foil. Give as gifts to a special someone. Sponge Heart Prints (give child a large heart cut from glossy art paper;let them use a heart-shaped sponge to dip in shallow dish of paint and print on the paper). Heart Lacing Cut a large red heart shape from posterboard. Punch holes around the perimeter using hole punch. Let children lace yarn through holes. Valentine Party on Friday...valentine goodies and punch. Also the kids will be exchanging valentines with each other. Counting Hearts I am going to cut out different sizes and colors of hearts and put in a small basket. We are going to practice counting the hearts, and also matching up the pairs. Cards for Parents The children are going to use paint, contruction paper, white doilies, glue, glitter, etc. to make valentine cards for their parents. Heart Headband Make a headband out of heavy paper for each child. Trace 2 heart cookie cutters onto pink or red consrtuction paper and let the child color and cut out. Tape them to pipe cleaners to make antennae and attach to headband. Nursery rhyme The Queen Of Hearts Heart rubbings Cut out different sizes of hearts from sandpaper. Tape hearts to table and lay a sheet of white typing paper over them. Use side of crayon to lightly rub over the hearts, making pattern on paper. Heart Straw Trace and cut out heart from colored paper. Use a hole punch and make 2 holes in center of heart, not side-by-side, but one under the other, about an inch or two apart. Thread a drinking straw into one hole and back out the other. Cute for the kids to use in their punch for the party or to take home. Stuffed Heart Draw a large heart onto a double thickness of newspaper. Cut out and staple all around, leaving a small opening. Let kids decorate their hearts with fingerpaint. After drying, stuff with crumpled newspaper. Staple opening shut. Cut long pieces of pink and red crepe streamers and, making a tail, staple to bottom point of heart. Heart Puzzle Cut a large heart from red or pink posterboard. Cut into several pieces, making a puzzle. I am also making heart-shaped waffles in the waffle iron for the kids' breakfast on friday morning. I also have some valentine poems and songs if you'd be interested. Just e-mail me. Hope these ideas help. Lynn (in Ga) Subject: Re: Valentines Day Idea VALENTINE MOBILE The Valentine mobile is very pretty when done, and can be hung any place in the house. The project is simple enough for even small children as the shapes are easy to cut out. Some teacher preparation might be required for making patterns for the younger student. MATERIALS: red construction paper 9x12 sheets scissors pencils glue or glue sticks string glitter paper doilies (optional for trimming only) heart stickers (optional for trimming only) glitter pens, or glitter glue for decoration The first five materials are required for the project. The others are optional depending on the budget of the teacher or the students. The project looks just as good "plain" or with all the glitter and the trimmings. METHOD: Distribute several sheets of red construction paper to each student. The teacher should have made heart patterns out of oak tag or similar strong materials for distribution. The hearts for the project should be no larger than 3 inches for the first one. Students will then cut out two hearts from the construction paper. By folding the paper in half, it is easier to cut out the heart. From the same heart, cut a smaller one, so that you have a heart and a frame. Cut out hearts and frames of various sizes. 6 or 7 of them will do. Put one heart on the table, and place string about 12 inches long over it. Leave about 2 inches of string showing to hang it up. Glue the string into place, right down the center of the heart. Glue the other one over it. Even if you use the frame, you can glue another small heart in the center of the frame. Do this until you have used up all the hearts. Decorate them with glitter, glitter pens etc. if you want. When done, hang them from the light fixtures in the room. Let the students take them home for Valentines Day. I had a bunch of small plastic children sized hangers, from when my children were little. We needed a way to incorporate into a project for the day care children. Using two hangers we placed them as wings bottom to bottom,(I know this sounds hard to imagine). Then the children made cupids, we placed the "wings" on the back of the cupid, covered in tissue paper and attached a little note; Mommy and Daddy, Roses are red, Violets are blue, Happy Valentine's Day - I am sure "hung" up on you! Love, Susie They are really cute - Kallie >> I saw this in Martha Stewart (sorry), but it looked easy (really). I went to AC Moore (my favorite craft store because they give discounts to teachers), and bought some inked stamp pads (the kind that washes off fingers and clothes). By having the children use their thumbs, slant the thumb one way and print, slant it the other way overlapping and print. You have a heart. Outline in marker. I'm sure you all can come up with some "Thumbody Loves You" type of message I thought the kids would love this poem. I'M A VALENTINE FOR YOU ("She'll be coming round the mountain) I'm a teeny tiny valentine for you, (Use a tiny, squeaky voice) I'm a teeny tiny valentine for you, I'm a teeny tiny valentin, I'm always your, will you be mine? I'm a teeny tiny valentine for you. I'm a medium-sized valentine for you, (use medium voice) I'm a medium-sized valentine for you, I'm a medium-sized valentin, I'm not too big and that's just fine. I'm a medium-sized valentine for you. I'm a great big valentine for you. (use loud voice) I'm a great big valentine for you. I'm a great big valentine, And I will love you all the time. I'm a great big valentine for you. Create a family love tree.Find a bare branch about 12 to 18 inches in length.Spray-paint it white or leave it natural,if you wish.Set the branch upright,in a jar filled with marbles, stones, cat litter etc...Place the arrangement on a table. Cut out two or 3 dozen pink, red & purple hearts.(Hearts can be about 2" wide.) Punch a hole at the top of each heart & set the hearts in a basket w/some string & pens next to the tree.Encourage family members to write on a heart what they appreciate & love about another family member, then hang it on the tree. Another idea is to have the teacher ask the children & write the affirmation on the hearts. TeachPixie @aol.com Here's an idea for using the teacher's valentine cards. Use them to make a counting book, a shape book, color book etc. The students will enjoy seeing theirs in the book. Cheryl oconn@worldnet.att.net upstate NY Have the students make a simple picture frame by gluing popsicle sticks together. Then glue on the little candy hearts with the sayings that are so popular around Valentines Day. Finally, add a picture and put a magnet on the back. >Here are all the valentine songs, rhymes, etc. I have compiled. Some from >this loop, some from others, and the internet.
