XTree, ZTree
The filemanager Xtree and its follow-ups Xtree
Pro and Xtree Gold are legendary 16 bit MS-DOS text mode programs from
the 80's when PC's started. With more than 3 million sold copies Xtree
is one of the most successful utility programs for MS-DOS. If you have
ever used it in these good old days and learned about its advantages you
would not miss it. Unfortunately, Xtree disappeared in the beginning of
the 90's because the XTree company was sold and the new owner, Central
Point Software, stopped the development. With the upcoming graphical user
interfaces like Windows there seemed to be no need for such an "old fashioned"
text mode tool. There was also Xtree for Windows, but it wasn't very successful.
On the other side, on 32 bit Windows 95 / NT with long filenames, the original
DOS 16 bit Xtree was only of minor use. But during the late 90's some people
remembered the advantages of Xtree and several Xtree clones came up for
Windows 95, OS/2 and also for Unix/Linux.
