Despite its flaws, PhotoMax can handle the photo editing basics.
You can rotate, crop, copy, and paste your images in an area called
the Image Tray. Eight buttons activate the main functions, such as
Get Photo, Special Effects, Retouch Photo, and Print It. Pressing
a button causes a new set of tools to appear in the Tool Palette.
PhotoMax is compatible with all TWAIN-compliant digital cameras and
scanners, and it supports the standard GIF, BMP, TIFF, PCX, TGA,
        JPEG, and PCD file formats.

Beyond the basics, PhotoMax offers some special effects to enhance
your images. The most interesting effects reside in PhotoMax's 24
filters, two of which (Melting and Painting) are of Photoshop
quality. Applying filters is a straightforward process: preview
your images in the Image Tray, then adjust the intensity of the
filter with the scroll bar or the plus and minus symbols. It's a
fine system when it works--we had repeated trouble applying several
different filters. At times, pressing the Filter button did nothing.

The Creative Gallery lets you have other sorts of fun with your
photos. In Photo Fantasy, you can transfer pictures of friends and
family to images of famous pieces of art, famous places, star
athletes, and retro Americana. If you'd like to display your art to
the world, Photo Templates let you add images to calendars or
T-shirts. However, the PhotoMax CD must be in your CD-ROM drive
when you view the clip art or photos--another inconvenience.
