THE IMMUNOSUPPRESSIVE AND IMMUNOMODULATORY APPROACH IN THROBOTIC THROBOCYTOPENIC PURPURA IN MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS

. D.Kountouris, Center for Neurological Diagnosis, Athens, Greece.

Background: The combination of the diseases, Thrombotic Thrombo-cytopenic purpura and Multiple Sclerosis (MS), as a clinical entity is almost unknown. The use of Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG) in both diseases is widely known. Also well known is the use of immunosuppression in the treatment of those diseases. Here is reported the particularly interesting use of a combination of Mitoxantrone with IVIG with doppler virus inactivation, in a patient suffering from the two diseases.

Material and Methods: A 42-year-old patient was suffering from Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic purpura and MS. For two years she has been under immunosuppressive therapy and she presented a significant aggravation in her clinical condition with increased platelet thrombosis. Her treatment was changed for the following two years to therapeutic combination of Dexamethason, IVIG and Mitoxantrone. The clinical condition of the patient was reevaluated.

Results: After that treatment and for the following two years the patient presented a constant clinical improvement with stable results of blood examination.

Conclusion: The therapeutic combination of MITOXANTRONE and IVIG was proved ideal for the treatment of Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic purpura and MS.
