Mr. Grubb=s
Resource Lab
Van Buren Elementary
Dear Parents,
The First Grade has been playing the money
game. They use the spinner to select
numbers at random which range one through nine. Then they receive the amount of money represented by the spinner. This semester the First Grade has learned to
double a number of the spinner and add a given number. This is an example of the student=s work: 4+4+2, 8+8+6 and 6+6+4. The students can make change with $1, $2,
$5, $10, $20, $50 and $100. This game
teaches number recognition and magnitude of numbers.
During third quarter the students have
mastered addition of two digit numbers by two digit numbers through the use of
touch math. They have learned to carry
in addition problems. The students are
currently learning to subtract with the touch method in problems which do not
require borrowing.
I=m very pleased with the progress the First Graders have made in the
first semester. The students are
gaining confidence in their abilities with numbers and mathematical concepts.
In the next semester they will be working
with the new CD math programs. These
programs will represent a significant increase in math exposure for the First
Grade. As the Math Lab Instructor, I am
very excited and eager to share these CD rom disk with my students.
I am in the process of constructing a web
page for students to do math on line.
Mr. Grubb=s Virtual Classroom can be found on the Van
Buren School Home page. The
Kindergarten page is usable if your child would like to view it.
Sincerely,
Mr. Grubb
