Perth
is the capital of Western Australia. It is beautifully
situated on the River Swan which flows into the Indian Ocean. The
river is greatly used by the public who have access along the whole length
of its banks. Sailing, wind surfing and fishing are major recreations during
the Summer months.
A worthwhile place to visit is the WA Art Gallery, which has a fine collection of Australian and Western Australian paintings including Aboriginal Art. A program of important visiting exhibitions is also maintained. Next to the Art Gallery in the Perth Cultural Centre there is the Alexander Public Library. This houses the Battye Library which concentrates on WA historical records. Adjacent to the Library there are the buildings of the WA Museum where important artifacts and historical objects will be found. The current population of Perth is
1.15 million compared to whole State of Western Australia (WA) with a population
of 1.73 million. The medium age is 33 years (1996).

Perth shopping
areas are compact and centre around the Hay Street Mall shown opposite.
More major stores and duty free are close by in Wellington Street which is connected to the Mall by numerous Arcades of shops. Perth people are friendly and will happily direct you to other places if required. Look for the stopping places for the City Transperth buses that will take you free of charge around the city. It is a good way to get a cost free tour. There is a stopping place directly opposite the Railway Station. |

the Tourist Centre.
If you would like to do your shopping in the new "environmental city" take the Currambine train from Perth Railway Station to the City of Joondalup. You will find it rewarding to visit the environs of Joondalup where new buildings are still under construction. The photo shown was taken in Christmas 1997 at the Galleria Sopping Centre in the suburb of Morley, North East of Perth. |
![]() Perth Town Hall |
The Perth
Town Hall is located on the corner of the Hay St Shopping Mall and
Barracks Street.
The hangmans noose surrounding the clock faces and the arrows in stone reflect the convict heritage of this building. The Old Treasury building shown behind is also of architectural interest. The area is currently the focus of a major restoration which will add to the tourist appeal. Souvenier shoppers can find shops of
interest along Barrack street.
