This trip was cut a little short due to the shitty weather. The first thing we
checked out was the hospital bunker. It's quite easy to find. It's the first
left on the same road as the BOQ used to be. It's about 100ft down a dirt road.
Becareful of the rock that sticks out of the middle of the path if you're in a
car. We managed to beat the crap out of the bottom of our car and barely missing
the gas tank. The bunker has two large entrances which are locked up with large
rusty metal doors (which if necessary could be pryed open). We could hear wind
blowing inside the place so i figured there had to be another opening somewhere.
On top of the bunker there are a few chimney/vents, etc, but if you go right to the
top of the hill there is a huge vent with a metal grate over it. The grate
is only held down by some wire which can easily be removed. There are ladder
rungs going down into the vent so i'm assuming you can get into the bunker through
here. Who knows whats still down there. Hopefully next trip we can get into it.
Next we set out to look for the Coastal Gun bunker. We drove down towards
the backlands trail and one of the roads that is normally closed off was open
because there were Cadets camping down there somewhere the night before. A
little ways down the road there are about 12 large bunkers. The doors are open
on all of them. They're all empty except for a few which had a rusted old
bed frame in them. We followed a dirt road off the backland trail road
hoping to find the bunker, but after walking in the pouring rain for 20 minutes
we assumed we were in the wrong place.
The Gun bunker was actually back closer to the base.
It's built into the top of the hill behind where there used to be 700 block
housing (which was torn down last fall). There are three entrances to the bunker
one is boarded up, another has a locked iron gate and the middle entrance
is open. It was really dark inside so the Maglight came in handy. There's
not much in there except a bunch of empty rooms (which i assume were used for
storing ammo for the 2 big guns that used to be outside the bunker. The inside
of the bunker is oddly clean concidering the thing hasn't been used in decades.
At the end of the bunker with the iron gate there were a bunch of unfired
blanks from guns, which i later found out were probably from Canadian Armed Forces
training. Near the center of the bunker there are large manhole covers. They
don't look like sewer drains because there's no holes in them. It's possible there's
more to the bunker under these covers but we weren't feeling upto checking them
out after wasting so much time walking in the rain. Next time.
