The rhythmic drum beat pounded in my ears as an enormous rush of adrenaline coursed through my veins. The crowd roared as Danvers’ moth nimbly flit around the battle stage, enraging Leviathan. “Dammit!” I shouted. The announcer continued to narrate the raging battle, but I tuned him out for the remainder of it. I looked across the stadium at the enormous match status display.

On the right half, only one of three Pokemon markers was illuminated under a photo of my opponent. On the other, all three lights shone under my picture. Danvers regained his composure and was back on the offensive. He shouted some random commands to Venomoth and watched as it hurtled toward Leviathan. Just before impact, I heard the familiar noise again. It was a soft, repeating series of sounds, teasing my mind. I couldn’t identify it… yet it grew steadily louder. Jack was powerfully waving the flag, but Heather was nowhere in sight. I turned my attention back to the battle as Leviathan howled.

Venomoth had impacted just below its jaw. My Gyarados heavily lifted its gargantuan tail and began swatting at the annoyance, wailing in a horrifying berserker rage. The mane-like fin projections on its back billowed in the breeze. The moth blurred into a purple streak as it tried in vain to evade the imminent devastation of the blow. It hovered and rocketed through the air, pausing occasionally to draw an attack, then narrowly escaping. Leviathan was slowly growing weary. It shrieked in frustration and finally smashed Danvers’ Pokemon into the far wall of the arena. The battered moth rose into the air and prepared for a last-ditch effort. “VENOMY!” my opponent screamed. “HYPER BEAM ATTACK!”

I was surprised that his Pokemon knew such a devastating attack. I launched my command. “LEVIATHAN! COUNTER, THEN BITE!” The final act of the furious battle was underway.
