The first unified
kingdom of Sweden had developed by 1000 AD, as local tribes combined -
largely though warfare - into one dominant group. Unfortunately for
historians, the names and dates of Sweden's earliest kings, from the
period when they became 'Swedish', are now either lost or unclear. Some
traces remain, either in difficult sources, or in the royal titles
themselves: the first name in the following list is actually Erik VII.
