Disclaimer: Saban owns everything Power Rangers related. I own nothing. Some of the idea came from "Someone to Watch Over Me" by Mele.
Author's Note: I'd like to thank Mele for letting me use her idea (of sorts). I'd also like to thank the people at the Youth Center Message Board for helping me with various aspects of this fic, as well as Ryan Palmer and Warrior Ranger. I got the idea for Adam as a writer from Purple Phoenix. LadyDragon and Randel get a special thank you for beta reading this for me. This is the first part of my new series "The Power of Pink." This is my first posted fanfic, and for that matter, first finished. I'd love to know what people think of it. So, if you haven't guessed by now, I'd love some feedback. And yes, I know, there isn't much action in this. I'm just setting the stage - it gets really good by part three.
Pronunciation Note: "Eurydice" is pronounced "yur - RIH - dih - see." Accent on the second syllable. It is NOT, repeat NOT "yuree - dice"
The first thing Kendrix thought when she awoke was that her head hurt. A lot. She opened her eyes, the shut them quickly when the light came poring in. The second thing was a line from a classic movie on Earth. "Toto, I don't think we're in Kansas anymore."
With her eyes closed, she did a mental rundown of her body. Her head was throbbing. She discovered that she could wiggle her fingers, and cautiously brought them to her face. Her glasses were still there, and still intact. Through soft patting she found that there were no wounds anywhere on her face. In fact, her skin felt almost better than it usually did. Dismissing that thought as the headache talking, she stretched out both arms, maneuvering them in all possible ways. Nothing hurt there, either. She wiggled her toes, and was pleased to discover that she could. All in all, it seemed that it was just the monster headache. Nothing was broken, or even felt sore. She risked opening her eyes again, cautiously and slowly. The light seemed less harsh. But where was she?
Sitting up slowly, taking exquisite care not to jar her head, she took a quick inventory of her
surroundings. It seemed like she was in a room not unlike her room on Terra Venture. At least, in terms
of size. Content and appearance were a far different matter. Where her room on Terra Venture had been
mostly white, this one was entirely pink. The only other places a different color could be seen were in a
few pieces of furniture and the silver walls. Her room on Terra Venture was fully-equipped: beds,
furniture, kitchen, windows, cupboards, cabinets, computers and everything. This room had a single
mattress with pink pillows and sheets shoved into one corner, a rose-colored couch and leather recliner in
another, a wooden table with two chairs in the third, and a bookcase with many books in the fourth. A
door was between the bed and bookcase, and on the wall between the bookcase and the table was a huge
screen, much like the one she'd seen on the bridge of the Astro MegaShip. The remaining two walls held
multiple picture frames. Her head hurt so much she could only guess as to what the frames contained.
Kendrix herself was in the middle of the room, only a few feet away from the mattress. The floor,
thankfully, had the softest carpet she had ever felt. It was, of course, pink. She decided not to
try to stand up, as her head was still in unbearable pain, and she didn't want to risk falling. Or worse,
fainting. She crawled to the mattress and promptly fell into a deep sleep. The last thing she thought
before drifting off was "I have never seen a room that was so pink."
Hours, days, or some other period of time later, Kendrix awoke. This time, the first thing she thought was how it hadn't been a dream - she was in this place, and the place was pink. But how had she gotten there? The last thing she remembered was venturing into the heart of the danger to destroy the Savage Sword. Cassie was lying on the ground about ten feet away, writhing in agony as the sword drained both her powers and her life. Kendrix had known that she was the only way to save Cassie's powers and Cassie herself. Ignoring Cassie's shouts for her to stop, and the pleas of her quickly approaching teammates, Kendrix had swung at the sword with her Quasar Saber, then . . . nothing. That was the last thing she remembered until waking up in the middle of the floor in the pink room.
Surely, the destruction of the Savage Sword had killed her. Hadn't it? And if it had, she had never imagined that Heaven would be so . . . pink. Or so empty. Wasn't she supposed to have been met by Saint Peter at the Pearly Gates? Even in Hell, one was supposed to have been met by the devil. Yet she had met neither. She hadn't encountered a single soul since she had left (or whatever it was that she had done) the Space team and her own team. If this was the afterlife, it wasn't shaping up to be much of an eternity.
Wherever she was, it was time to do some exploring. Before moving, however, Kendrix did another check of her body. Her head was better, and there were still no signs of anything broken. In fact, she felt far better than she had in years. Not only that, she was sure that she had not taken her glasses off before collapsing on the mattress, yet they were carefully resting on a shelf that extended from the wall. As she reached for her glasses, something seemed off. Slipping them on, Kendrix realized what the problem was. She wasn't wearing her GSA uniform. Standing up, she discovered that she was clothed in a shirt not unlike the one she had worn the day she took the place of Carolyn. Instead of the white pants, she was wearing a pair of stonewashed jeans. Her feet were clad only in a pair of white socks.
The room looked different now, compared to earlier. Perhaps the now-gone headache had distorted her vision the first time she looked around. Upon closer inspection, there were in fact many cupboards, cabinets and drawers built into the walls. In fact, where she was standing now, next to the bed, had quite a few, as did the opposite corner, by the table. Opening them randomly, she discovered a complete wardrobe, all in shades of pink, of course. There were brushes, combs, soap, and all sorts of other items, both cosmetic and hygienic. Incredibly, in a tall cabinet, which opened to reveal a closet inside, Kendrix found her GSA uniform! It was not the one she had been wearing the day she saved Cassie - she remembered having spilled her drink at lunch on the arm, and the stain was nowhere to be found.
Moving away from the bed, Kendrix headed for the corner with the bookcase. However, on the way there, she discovered the door. Eager to find out just where she was, she quickly grabbed the door handle and twisted it. It wouldn't move. Frantically, she twisted it again, toward both the right and left sides. Nothing. There weren't even any hinges that she could dismantle if she would be so inclined. Of course, she wasn't to that point of desperation yet. Remembering the doors of Terra Venture, Kendrix began searching around the door frame for some sort of control panel that would open it. She poked and prodded all around the door, hoping to find some hidden release that would produce the hidden panel. It was all in vain. If the door did in fact open, it must only be able to be activated from the other side. Trying to shake the sudden claustrophobic feeling, Kendrix moved on to inspect the corner of the room containing the bookcase.
The case was constructed from a dark variety of wood. Kendrix immediately recognized it as mahogany, her favorite type of wood for furniture, although very expensive. So expensive, she had never been able to purchase anything made out of it; she could only dream of doing so one day. A dream that she believed to have died the day she was selected to go on Terra Venture. The day she realized that wherever she ended up, there was a good chance that she would never see this type of wood again. Kendrix gazed at it wonder, amazed that she finally had mahogany furniture. The bookcase extended from the floor to the ceiling. There were eight individual shelves, containing thick books on the bottom to paperbacks on the top. Squatting, Kendrix realized that the books on the bottom three shelves were the same books she had been using in the R&D department on Terra Venture. Among those books were the books that Kendrix had wanted to purchase for the department, but had been denied by the head of R&D. The next two shelves contained more nonfiction books that had always been her favorites, but ones that she had had to leave behind before coming on Terra Venture. The remaining shelves all contained her favorite genres of books - science fiction and mystery, with a touch of fantasy and romance thrown in for good measure. There was even a complete collection of her favorite author - Adam Park. Not only did she now have his entire set of mysteries, but she also had all of his other works that she had never had the chance to read. The entire fantasy series entitled "Ninja Warriors" was present, and Kendrix couldn't wait to read them. She had only heard about the series, in which the main characters were all animals. Looking at the back of one of the books, she discovered that the animals were a wolf, a frog, a falcon, a crane, a bear and an ape. Promising herself that she would read one of the books soon, she moved on toward the next corner.
A huge screen encompassed almost the entire wall between the bookcase and the table. Examining it, she couldn't find any buttons to turn it on. Recalling touch-activated screens, she ran a cautious finger across the screen. Still nothing. There had to be some way to turn it on. It took up almost an entire wall in the room - that alone must signify its importance. Figuring there had to a remote somewhere, or at least some form of a control panel, she began an extensive search of the wall space around the screen. The wall space that she could reach, of course. She poked and prodded, much like she had near the door. Unfortunately the search, much like the search near the door, proved to be fruitless. Kendrix furrowed her brow. It didn't make any sense that there was no way to turn the screen on. In its location, it could be viewed easily when one was sitting on the couch or recliner, as well on the bed, or even at the table. It was of a size that could only be described as huge. If it didn't have a purpose, it wouldn't be there. And if it had a purpose, why couldn't she turn it on? Kendrix just added those to her growing pile of questions, and went to check out more of the room.
The next corner contained the table and two chairs. The table was circular, about two feet long, and looked to be made of the same wood as the bookcase and the chairs. There was more of the same type of cupboards and cabinets and drawers on these walls as there were near the bed. Opening these, Kendrix was not surprised to find her favorite things to eat, along with the basic elements of food. Finding cooking supplies, both for the food to go in and for going in the food, in other cupboards led Kendrix to believe that she could also cook her own food, if she so desired. In the largest cupboards, she discovered a stove, a microwave, an oven, a sink and a refrigerator. There was even a pink apron! Kendrix was suddenly grateful for the cooking lessons that the GSA had required all of its members to take. She had not had quite the knack for cooking that Kai did, but she was now able to get by without starving. Seeing all of the food and drinks, she remembered that she hadn't had anything to eat or drink since breakfast on the day she discovered the Savage Sword. She quickly whipped up a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, along with some iced tea. There was definitely only one place to eat all of this, and that was on the rose- colored couch.
The couch was about seven feet long. Kendrix hypothesized that this was a couch that a tall person just might be able to feel comfortable sleeping on. There was a small end table next to the couch, near the foot of the bed. Kendrix placed her glass there before taking a big bite of her sandwich. Dabbing at the crumbs on her mouth, she glanced up. The screen was directly in front of her. In fact, she was probably in the ideal spot to watch whatever was on that screen. Provided, of course, that the screen could be turned on. There had to be a way to turn it on. It took up too much space, and the arrangement of the room was too convenient for viewing for the screen to mean nothing. But there wasn't a remote to be found. The poking and prodding had been pointless, and none of the various cupboards, cabinets and drawers had contained a remote.
Taking a sip of her iced tea, Kendrix realized something else. This room contained almost everything
she could want - food and clothing, books to read, a place to sleep, everything. And it had all been
tailored to her needs. All of her favorites were there: food, beverages, reading material - both
nonfiction and fiction, clothing, hair care products. There was even her favorite brand of toothpaste! She
hadn't tried on the clothes on yet, but she was certain that they would all fit perfectly. All of those could
be explained by going through her room on Terra Venture, or making some careful inquiries. But the
bookcase and table could not be explained by that. She had never ever told anyone about her
love of mahogany furniture. It had always been a secret desire; she had never voiced it to anyone,
including her parents or closest friends. Sure, she had kept a diary once upon a time, like most young
girls did, but she had stopped writing long before she had seen her first piece of mahogany furniture.
There was really no way for anyone to know of her preference, outside of reading her mind. But
how could they have? Who knew enough about her to make this room exactly to her
preferences? She wasn't anybody important; she was just Kendrix Morgan. Sure, there was the whole
Pink Galaxy Ranger thing, but even then, who would have been able to read her mind? She wished she
could ask Alpha all of this, as perhaps it could be a side effect of the power - easier access for others to
read her mind. But she couldn't ask. Alpha was far away, on Terra Venture. With all of her . . . friends.
Kendrix choked back a sob. She was not going to start crying now. There would be time for
that later. Speaking of time, how long was she supposed to stay here? Just going by the amount of food
in the kitchen area (as she was now calling the corner with the table and chairs), she wasn't leaving here
any time soon. Wherever 'here' was.
