2000-10-02: Young
Jedi '99 World Champion
Q. What drew you to Young Jedi?
I would say that it had the Star Wars name and it was done by
Decipher, which means that it would most likely be a good game
to play.
Q.
If you could change one thing
in Young Jedi, what would it be?
Oh my what a question! Well, although I love the game as it is,
I would say that more battle in space would be good and I can't
wait for dueling!
Q.
Apparently Young Jedi has
changed much with the new effects, yet how did you prepare for
the worlds in 99? Was their much thought to you deck building?
Actually, I playtested my decks for like weeks and weeks with
my good friends Rob and Chris. The Tank Machine was probably hard
to make only because it took so many rares to make, but I pulled
it off. The Light Side deck was much, much more complicated. Originally,
we incorporated Obi-Wan in the Red Dot, but his damage was a major
damper on this, so at the last minute(and I mean very last minute!)
we changed this to 5 Coruscant Guards and 5 Ithorians. Good decision.
It beat the tanks at the highest percentage of any other deck
we made, so I took it.
Q.
If you can recall, who was
the most fierce competitor?
Well, I'll give some props to my boy Matt Reed here. This guy
is as fierce as can be. He also a really great guy, and we got
some really serious rematches in this summer at Dragon-Con. I'm
glad that I got to know him better!
Q.
Do you feel pressure as the defending
champion? Do you feel you will take it this year of 2000?
Well, I have been like preparing for eternity, so we'll see. But,
"I Have A Bad Feeling About This!". No one has ever won twice
in a world championship, so that coming in is bad kharma, but
we'll see. I will be doing the best that I can!
Q.
What kind of impact do you
think EMODM will have on game play and your decks? Do you feel
that a person must buy allot of them?
EMODM is a great product, and I would be suprised if I didn't
see them at least a little in everyone's decks, but we'll see.
As far as my decks....that's top secret;) I'll get back to ya
on that one!
Q.
Checking out the Rankings
now on Deciphers site, who would you like to play most and why?
Well, I'll play anyone if they want a game in. I have played Jonathon
Dunn and that's about it for the top players in the world.
Q.
What is the greatest misconception in Young Jedi?
That Young Jedi is the most simplistic game of all time. This
is completely false. It takes time, effort, and a lot of playtesting
of decks. It's not all luck and it's not simple by any means.
Q.
What advice can you impart on the subject of building your own
decks? What IS your secret?"
I have no secrets. I play as much as possible against good decks,
and I find out how to beat them. That's it.
Q.
What were your personal highlights
from the World Finals of 1999?
Meeting everybody was totally cool. Winning World's like almost
gave me a heart attack. It felt great, and hope to repeat.
Q.
What did you learn from 1999?
Well, going to sleep can be useful when a big tournament is involved.
And, never underestimate your opponent's decks.
Q.
Do you still feel "Awesome Amadala"
Queens are still dominant? What to your knowledge and opinion
do you consider the strongest deck?
Definitely a possibility, but not as powerful as before. The meta
right now is Tanks and Anakin/R2 deck. I feel these decks are
pretty powerful, as is Darth Maul with his Double Bladed saber.
Q.
What other hobbies do you have other than Young Jedi?
Star Wars CCG, L5R, reading, computers, and video games!
Finishing up! Thanks for the interview and I hope other players
can learn something off what you told me today.
