"HAVING AN EFFECT ON PLAYERS WORLDWIDE"

Tim Guzman - Gold 117
2000-05-15: Nevada, Grand Slam Champion

Q. Since the first set of Menace all the way too Naboo you have been a great contributor to the Local YJ playerbase, what keeps you coming back to play YJ when your foremost love would be StarWars CCG?

A. Good question. First I would have to say I like playing YJ just as much as promoting it. It is a fun game, a relaxed game, and one that anything can happen. It is true that SWccg is my true love, but I have this feeling that Young Jedi is like a stepping stone for so many people to get into the ccg world. A lot of young ones as they improve in YJ may want more and I will be waiting there to show them SWccg. In either case I will be involved with Yj for quite awhile. :)

Q. Who so far would you consider your toughest opponent(S) and why?

A. Will it sound cocky if I say I have no tough opponents? Only the hand that is dealt to me can make it a tough game. My draw is my toughest opponent.

Q. What do you consider when building a strong deck, and is it the same style for each deck you build?

A. Cheap Deploy, and High Power. I try to have at least 2 of the dots with low deploy cost and one of them with medium to high deploy cost. The battle cards need to also make since with what you are playing. I do not like to play a lot of multiples of any certain Battle card, during a game that will make me so predictable. Plus I do have only a certain amount of cards to work with so I do my best.

Q. Is there a certain way that you stack your decks, and if so why?

A. Not really. However I know weapons can be such an important thing to so many decks, that it might be good to shuffle like crazy making sure that they are not stuck together.

Q. Why did you decide to start playing Young Jedi?

A. It started back when I went to the Star Wars Celebration last year in Denver. I tried the game out and like it. I was doing demo's there for awhile and I saw how easy it was for so many people to pick up the game. I thought Decipher did a good job, and they have something here. So I decided to promote and Collect it. Being a general SW Fan always helps when getting into things like this. And of course I knew this would be good for getting people into SWccg also.

Q. What are your thoughts of The Battle of Naboo set?

A. This is the best set to date in my opinion. Game text for characters, Effects, and many cool strategies are in this set. A lot of people may argue that there is still some dominant strategies out there. Well there is, but the Naboo set really balances the field. I proved that by winning the LV Grand Slam with only a little Naboo cards to improve what I was playing.

Q. I have seen the decklists you used. Can you tell us how you came up with those decks?

A. I played with what little cards I owned. But not just throwing anything together. I put in a couple of combo, and put in some counters to what I thought I was going to see. Until the playing field changes, my darkside will have Star Fighters, because Lightside right now are addicted to unique characters and the damage could mean game. And my lightside will always have a wide verity of characters so I will not be forced to transport, because dark is packing starfighters. You will also notice that my darkside I like to pack more locations that the normal person. Well I feel that is HUGE for the darkside. I end up dropping my hand fewer times, since any battle I will loose much damage and this helps go through my deck less. Not to mention the fact to convert a location lightside might really need.

Q. Do you think they are the best decks for the Tournament Scene right now?

A. No way. But I happen to be one of those out there that doesn't think there is a best deck. If you build a good deck, and make the right decision during play time. Then I think you should always to fine. But even with the best decisions in this game, your opponent will sometimes out think you. But that's one of the things I think is so cool about this game. Now I know that my decks could be made better for the playing scene, but I own only a few cards, for example I have 3 JarJar's, but only one of them is from Naboo. Now when I own two more I will make all 3 of them from Naboo. Things like that I can see improving a deck for a certain playing scene.

Q. Will you be using something similar for the Regional Events coming up?

A. Absolutely. There is no doubt in my mind. These decks I had from the beginning, I only keep making few changes as new sets come out. Beside I have a lack of funds and can never really build a money deck as some might call it. For example I will never have a tank deck, because I will not be able to own enough of them. But that's ok, because I have fun with what I am playing with now. And Fun is still the number ONE reason for me. Hopefully that doesn't change for me. WAIT...!!!! I just noticed that I won't be playing in the Regional event, because I am RUNNING the event, but I guess if I was that was my answer =)

Q. How does it feel to be the Grand Slam Champion?

A. Oh...its cool. The uncut sheet look great. I had a great time during that tournament. So much could have made a difference in every game I played, but draws prove me victorious. It was great.

Finishing up! Thanks for the interview and I hope other players can learn something off what you told me today.
