"HAVING AN EFFECT ON PLAYERS WORLDWIDE"

Tatooine, Colorado Battle of Naboo Tournament Report
2000-04-09:

With a moderate turn out of 10 at our first Battle of Naboo tournament, we had some nervous players wondering what lay in store for them as they broke open their recently updated decks.

Handmaidens and Tanks were still prevalent, but a new breed of gungun and Darth Maul decks made an appearance. A couple of battle droid decks showed themselves also.

I was running this tournament, but had given guidance for building the decks. There were MANY effects in this tournament proving that people liked the extended impact of these cards. Some were limited in use, others built their decks around the effect. Popular cards were centered around deploying more counters per turn.

In the first round there were a couple of surprises as the higher players struggled to get wins against normally weaker opponents.

Amy Tunier was the surprise of the evening as she took her 1430 rating and beat some top players over the head with it :) Her Battle Droid deck did not face a single Uh-Oh and did some serious damage with OOM-9 leading a fearsome attack against Jedi, Gunguns and Handmaidens alike. By the end of the 3rd game, Katie Billings had got off to a very rocky start with a 1 and 2 record as she learned to adapt her Gunguns to the decks she was facing. Heather and Amy were forging on undefeated as was Heathers husband, Shawn.. (I mention these names to demonstrate how many female players there are here, something that we are very proud of... we had 4 female players and 1 other that normally plays.) As they moved through the 8 round tournament, there were many tense moments, Heather being beaten by shawn to take her down and out of first place. Katie began to move up through the field as she became more comfortable with her decks. There
were 3 games where the Darkside players did a complete sweep!!

There was a tough game in the 8th round between Katie and Amy that was going to decide the winner of the tournament.. Katie took the win with the Darth Maul deck and won the tournament as somewhat of a sleeper, quietly moving up through the positions.

The effect of Battle of Naboo...

First..

Tanks.

This deck is by no means dead.. this deck had some success yesterday against the least BoN enhanced decks. However, against the Gunguns and other altered decks, the tanks fell hard. I saw the gunguns led by Tarpals take the tanks of the Battle plains!

Hand Maidens.

This deck was hurting, bad. Every DS deck contained at least the neimodians and some contained the effect "After Her!" I don't recall a handmaiden deck winning a game.

Darth Maul decks..

The 1st and 2nd place finishers both carried Darth Maul decks, and went a total of 7 out of 8 games with them .. Darth Maul is back and he is VERY VERY strong.. probably the strongest DS deck there is currently (I will post a sample darth maul deck at the bottom of the report)

Gungun decks ..

This is the best lightside deck edging out the Qui-gon deck. This still had grave troubles against most of the DS decks, but it took care of the tanks with no trouble.

So, that was the first tournament that I have been involved with that included Naboo.. it was very tough, as usual, but added many very interesting twists in the game play. Everybody is very happy with the naboo set.

After the tournament was complete, I arranged a little Austin Powers party which ended the evening with a lot of laughs, and many strange looks from the Magic Players around us as Colby Chavez (Denver Grand Slam Champion of YJ) shouted "I'm a Sexy Bitch" at the top of his lungs.. (it was 11 PM so no sensitive ears to offend).

Darth Maul deck

3x Darth Maul Sith Apprentice
3x Darth Maul from BoN
4x neimodian (various flavours)

Nute Gunray BON
2x Trade Federation tank (BON)
3x Horox
3x Aks Moe

Lott Dod
2x Edcel Bar Gane
2x Diva Shaliqua
Ann and Tann gella
4x sith probe droid (JC version)

2x This is too close
Sando Aqua Monster
I object
Sandstorm
Death from Above
2x Sith Force Push
2x Not for a Sith

2x Darth double saber
2x darth free saber
6x blaster Rifle

Naboo Theed Palace
Coruscant Galactic Senate
Tatooine Desert landing site

4x transport
2x Darth Maul sith infiltrator
Droid starfighter.

14 1's and 2's are not good things, unless they happen to be on the table Darth Maul and his saber are tough to dislodge. This is counteracted by the 36 5's and 6's in the deck, which if you pull a 5 and 6 when using mauls double saber gives you 17 to 19 power.. without a battle card!

This deck was going to mine, but was used by another player during playtesting, and they liked it. So I guess I am going to go for an Aurra sing deck instead!

Typical to start of Desert Landing Site and get a Maul down with his saber.. this will scare most people into giving up.. if they go to coruscant, and you cannot convert to the senate then fight until you can rescue Maul and decide if you have a better chance at Theed palace. This deck does well on all three planets and puts Darth Maul where he should be.
