Tatooine, Nevada Grand Slam Tournament Report
2000-05-10:

YJ Grand Slam Las Vegas NV 5/6/00

For a lot of people it was an early one at the Vacation Village. The tourney started at 9:30 am but registration was at 8:30 am. 32 people showed up from Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, California, and Massachusetts (I think). There were 2 state champions in attendance, Kyle Craft (from Colorado) and myself (from Nevada)as well as a couple of lovely ladies from out of state (Arizona and I think California). At the end Tim Guzman won the Grand Slam and was followed closely by a guy from California (sorry I don't remember your name) and Pat McLemore. The top three spots had a difference in differential of only 4 cards!!! Here is an account of my trials and tribulations through the six exciting games I battled through for my 4-2 record and my 8 (+62) Finnish.

Game 1: As usual in big events I had to face a local in the first game and that local was the eventual winner Tim Guzman (I am still not afraid of you in YJ). I had made some modifications to my state championship LS deck and had not fully shuffled. Tim took the first planet with much more power than I could handle considering I only had 2 characters and no weapons!
I then took the second planet with a strong force of 3 Padme's with Amidala's Blaster. I eliminated his characters and took the planet. At the final planet I was again without weapons and lost the planet and the game by 22 cards. Also having to drop my hand 5 TIMES was more than I could handle. You just can't win with only half a deck!
STATUS: 0 (-22)

Game 2: I was near the bottom of the pile at this point. My opponent from California played the previous game with only 50 cards (forgot his probe droids)and lost his game. He won the draw and started with Mos Espa. I dropped 3 Aurra Sing's but again could not buy a weapon if my life depended on it. He won the first planet via forfeit. I then won the second planet to a quick forfeit by him thanks to my Nute and Rune each with Blaster Rifle at the Theed Palace. On the third planet I dropped Mauls double saber and 2 probe droids with 1 Blaster Rifle and 1 Aurra Sing's Blaster Rifle on the first turn. The next turn I dropped Maul and transported the stranded Aurra's away. He didn't battle and dropped another Aurra Sing and that was the end!Win by 26.
STATUS 2 (+4)

Game 3: I will never live this game down. I lost to a local in his first tournament of YJ. "Keith" Melcic got luck is all I have to say. On the last planet all I had was 3 weapons and a Probe Droid. Lost by 6!
STATUS 2 (-2)

Game 4: I played another local in his first tournament, William Dozier. I beat him with ease and won by 38.
STATUS 4 (+36)

Game 5: This was the tough one! I was playing Tom Mascari, the #4 ranked player in the world. My 1-1 Sith Deck went up against his undefeated Jedi Deck. We both won quick and somewhat painless planets and we were to the final planet, Coruscant Galactic Senate. I am able to deploy a JC Maul and a BoN Maul along with Aurra Sing and each of them have matching WEAPONS! He has Qui-Gon and a few Padme's and Queen's. I only needed two battle to wipe him out. I drew 11 consecutive 6's and won the game by 5 cards. I only reported a 4 card win because I only remembered the next 4 cards in my reserve deck were 6's as well.
STATUS 6 (+30)

Game 6: This game went pretty much the same way as most of the games of the day. It was decided on the last planet. He was playing a little Tank & Battle Droid deck that used the interrupt where he only lost the Battle Droid if the Tank and Battle Droid fought together. I was playing my anti-tank Queen deck and had Qui-Gon, Padme, and Queen Amidala with 2 Amidala's Blasters. I had played the Couruscant Galactic Senate and had the matching Qui-Gon and Queen Amidala there along with padme and the blasters by turn 3. We battled once and my characters survived his assault for the turn. I had drawn 2 The Chancellors ambassador's and a Enough Of This Pretense in hand when I initiated a battle. He had a tank, a battle droid and a senator. I matched up perfectly and had Qui-gon and Padme battle together with Amidala's Blaster and the Queen with her Blaster and Enough... The Tank survived and he then deployed a probe droid and another character then evened up. I deployed a few characters!
for overrun and then wiped them out of the senate. Before doing this I had successfully transported all of my additional characters off the other two planets. I won the game by 32 cards and ended up in 5 th place at 8 (+62)

Hope you enjoyed my little review of how things went in the tourney. There were some tank deck out and about but I never really had to face a full out tank deck, but I was prepared for them!
