The young girl raced through the corridors of a large hospital.

Patients, nurses and doctors leapt out of the way as the reddish blur zoomed past them at high speed.

A few of them recognised her, for she was a regular at the hospital ever since her mother was admitted into their care. Rumours floated around in the locker rooms that her mother was subjected to an experiment gone wrong and that she had been left a little touched in the head.

Of course what made them notice the girl especially in this instance was that she was running and that she was looking positively exhilarated. Something which none of them had ever seen before that day.

The place was a real maze, especially to a five years old. But it was just a trivial matter to the girl as she ran happily towards her destination, for this place had been almost a second home to her now.

After so many visits, so many hours spent here, getting lost wasn't even a consideration, particularly for someone like this bright little girl.

"Momma!"

Picked, out of all the potential candidates. This girl… was destined to be the pilot of Evangelion Unit-02.

"Momma!"

Finally, her mother would be happy. She would have to acknowledge her… not that stupid doll.

"They picked me!"

It would like things use to be… she would have her mother back, and then... maybe… her father too.

"Momma!"

This was it… this was the room. All but kicking the door in, the little girl barely managed a step when she suddenly froze.

"Mom…ma…?"

Then came the scream. That was what brought a pair of nurses running.

They found the girl staring there, obviously in total shock, her cry having faded into a soft and barely audible whimper.

"Oh my god!"

"Get her out of here! Now!"

Wasting no time, one of the nurses grabbed her, tearing her from the shocking sight and quickly carried her away.

Taking her anywhere… anywhere but there…

Yet it was by far too late. The sight… The forms… had been burned intensely into her mind, her memories.

Were it was to remain.

"Are you sure you don't want me to come in with you?" asked a young man.

"Yes Shinji… I have to do this myself…" replied a young redheaded woman.

"Very well… I'll wait here then."

The woman gave him a nod, and promptly turned around towards the hospital entrance.

Stepping into the sterile atmosphere of the building, she was immediately reminded of the past. More than once, did she consider turning back. Yet, she pressed on, knowing that she would finally put an end to the dreams… to the nightmares… to the memories.

A small petit blond girl sat the nurses' station, filing in reports. She offered the redhead a smile and nodded as she passed by.

It did not take her long to reach the right door.

Slowly reach out, she pressed against the door handle with the tip of her fingers. The metal was cold to her touch, and felt awfully hostile in her mind.

Closing her eyes, the young woman concentrated and tried to steady her breath.

Then, she reopened her eyes.

The young woman proceeded to open the door and stepped inside in one smooth motion.

Within, she found an older woman, lying in the bed. Her eyes closed. The light poured into the dark room from the half-closed window blinds, silhouetting her features.

They remained for several minutes like that, wrapped in silence.

The older woman suddenly turned to face the younger one.

"Hello? A… Asuka…?" she asked.

Whilst she was able to recognise the young woman, it actually didn't dawn that she was really there. It was as if her eyes were not capable of fully focusing on reality.

"Hello… mother…"

The two nurses quietly chatted with each other as several doctors took the small girl away.

"You think she'll be alright?" asked one.

"I don't know…" replied the other.

"My god… can you imagine that…"

"Yeah… I know…"

"I mean… a child that young… to be the one who finds her own mother after she hanged herself…"

"Yea… huh? What…? You mean you don't know?"

"Know what?"

"That wasn't her mother… I mean, she looks a little like her, I give you that, but the one who hanged herself was a recent transfer from the psyche-ward. The girl's mother was transferred to a special treatment hospital last night…"

"Oh…. You think the girl knows?"

"I don't think so… maybe… someone should tell her…"

"Yeah… maybe someone should…"

The two women shrugged and walked off in the opposite direction. Neither of them ever saw the girl again.

*Author's Notes*

Ok, explanation… In this story, I present the possibility that Kyoko is still alive, though still pretty much insane.

Asuka's father, exploiting this event would keep Asuka from ever knowing that her mother is still alive, partially because of possible guilt, and partially because he wanted to cut all ties with Kyoko, even if it meant that Asuka thought that was her mother hanging from the ceiling…

Kyoko, being a loony, obviously didn't care much for contacting her daughter.

Both Asuka's father and Gendo create a screen of misinformation around the truth, in the case of Gendo it would be because if Asuka found out the truth it could make her an unstable element before he was done with her.

I mean… all the original screens relating to this event blacked out the woman's face… so we can only assume (ok… we've been pretty much told) that it was Asuka's mother. Shorts like this could possible become a whole series if I can think of other ones.
