"Correctional Officer"
- Walk under the rows of razor wire.
- That's how I start my day.
- Wondering somewhere in the back of my mind
- If I'll come out the same way.

- I do my job as best I can
- Behind walls of stone and steel.
- The community says no prayer for me.
- For what I must do or how I might feel.

- Before I left I kissed my baby's cheek.
- I held my husband tight.
- That's the last, "Be careful"
- I'll hear through this long night.

- I don't expect confetti parades
- Down Main Street in July.
- But a simple "Thank you" would mean
so much
- Before you pass me by.

- Society calls me "guard", not officer.
- And looks at me with disdain.
- But in my heart I know I'm the one that keeps
this place
- From going totally insane.
