"Originality" - Jade Beckett
Contradiction between our words and actions causes
severe miscommunication among the people of the world. We're constantly
separating the "good" people from the "bad", consciously or otherwise.
Judgment is all around us, and we're constantly being put into stereotypes.
Some people, looking for their own identity, find it easier and more comfortable
to snuggle into a stereotype and act accordingly. According to what, you
ask? According to society, according to those who set the precedent for
the way certain people are supposed to act.
Taking the time to find one's own identity can be
frustrating for young and old alike. Our lives are a constant search for
stability and perfection. We find ourselves looking for the perfect job,
mate, house, location...and in the meantime we sometimes forget about what
we want. We're all familiar with the yearning for change in adolescence
and mid-life. Always present is the fear that we have chosen the wrong
path because we've not yet experienced all the different life paths that
are briefly introduced to us.
It is this confusion that makes fitting in seem like
such a simple solution. Oftentimes, we conform to the values, religion,
and political outlook of our parents or others around us. How are we to
know what's right if we cannot explore our options?
Throughout our lives, we've heard of prejudice among
races and other groups. What separates us is not the color of skin, but
the color of thought. I ask you now to be the person that you feel you
should be. Live up to your own expectations, and never compromise the ability
to think for yourself.
