She Said, I Said

She said, "I love you with my soul and half my heart."
I said, "I love you with my heart and soul."
She said, "I think I love him."
I said, "You know you love me."
She said, "You have my heart
but I can't hurt him."
I said, "If you give him your lesser self
you'll hurt him even more."
She said, "I can't.  I can't."
I said, "You want.  You want."
She said, "It hurts to be loved by a poet."
I said, "It hurts for a poet to love."
She said, "You have a way of putting things."
I said, "I wish I had a way of putting things right."
She said, "I'm shivering."
And I, Oh God, Why didn't I say, "Let me hold you."
