| ~~Back at the house~~ "I know I should feel better but I don't" I said as we walked out of the nursery having put the babies to bed. "I know, I know. I feel the same way. Like the officer said there is nothing that can be done." Hayden said as we went into the bedroom to get ready for bed. I woke up at 3:25 in the morning and heard someone in the babies room. I jumped out of bed and quietly went to the nursery. I opened the door a crack, but all I could see was someone's shaddow. My heartbeat excelerated and it sounded so loud. I was gripping the doornob so hard that my knuckles were white as I opened the door. To my relief Hayden was standing by the window holding Maddy rocking back and forth. Aiden was peacefully sleeping in the crib sucking on his thumb. I realized that in my panic when I woke up I didn't even look over to see if Hayden was in bed. I was releaved and I walked up behind him and wrapped my arms around him resting my hands over his that were lightly tracing small circles on Maddy's back. After about 10 more minutes of staying in that position he finally laid her down in the crib beside Aiden. "Why are you up?" He asked as he sat down on the overstuffed chair in the corner of the room. I slowly walked over and sat down on his lap resting my head on his shoulder. My heartbeat had finally returned to normal and I could breath right again. "I woke up and heard you in here, but I thought you were Justin. I was so scared." I said as I fiddled with the hem at the bottom of his shirt. That was a nervous tendency that I had. I looked down at my hands and realized that they were still shaking. Hayden placed his hands over mine trying to stop them. "I'm sorry. I just couldn't sleep because everytime I heard a noise I thought it was coming from in here and I finally got tired of going back and forth and just stayed in here." He said as he kissed my forhead and pulled me up onto his lap more. "I don't know how long I can take this. I don't want to be worrying everytime I hear something or see a shaddow." I said as tears were falling from my cheeks onto his shirt. "We are just going to have to take this day by day, and right now everyone is alright." He said as he reached over his head and grabbed the blanket that was hanging over the top of the chair and spread it out over the two of us. We fell asleep in each others arms, momentarily content in the only security that we felt we had. |
