| Chapter 19 The next few weeks were spent worrying and trying to get on with life. Which was extremely hard because every time I heard a noise or saw a shadow I would turn around thinking it was Justin. It was very nerve racking and it was taking it's toll on Hayden and I. Then I heard the phone ring. "Hello" "How are you doing?" My heart sunk into my chest as I recognized the voice on the other end. "What do you want?" I asked "Shh, I'd really be quiet if I were you. I wouldn't want anyone to get hurt." Just then I could here Nikki in the background screaming for help. "Why do you have Nikki?" I asked. "I said be quiet." He asked again, but this time in a harsh, cold tone. "Why?" I asked defiantly "Because...." He said but then I cut him off. "Hayden is standing right here infront of me. So is a police officer, and this line is taped." I said. That was all a lie but he didn't know that. I just wanted to scare him. "Do you really think I am that stupid. The last time a cop has been to your house was 3 days ago and Hayden is outside playing basketball. You should tell him he really needs to work on his jump shots." "How do you....Where are you?" I asked. "Now do you really think I am going to tell you that. But I am sure that you know that I am somewhere near by. Infact I have been watching you this whole time. Every time you or Hayden have left the house I have known. Every time someone came to your house I knew who it was. How do you think I got Nikki?" He said as he held the reciever out towards Nikki and she started to yell for help. "Let her go, she has nothing to do with this." I said as tears started to fall down my cheeks and I couldn't help from crying out loud. "Listen, Hayden is coming back in the house and if he sees you crying he will know something is up." I could hear Hayden come in the front door, go into the kitchen, and get something to drink. "So if you have any compasion for you friend here, Meet me at the warehouse on the corner of Grable Drive and Maple in an hour." "Alright, please tell me you havn't hurt her." I asked "Nothing perminent, but you better be on time. I would even suggest being early. And one more thing, don't tell anyone. Don't bring anyone, and if I find out that you have, Nikki will be no more." He said as Nikki started screaming louder and crying at the same time. After I hung the phone up I started thinking of all the things that could happen. Hayden walked into the room and layed down on the floor infront of the TV. He knew I hated it when he sat on the furniture after he was outside sweating. He looked over at me. "You alright?" He asked sitting up. "Yea, I am just thinking about things." I said trying to cover up my fear. If he thought something was wrong he would not leave me alone until he found out. "Just try not to think about it. Nothing has happened for weeks. For all we know he could be long gone." He said as he finished off his orange juice. "Yea. Listen, can you keep an eye on Maddy and Aiden for a little while? I need to go for a drive." I said as I stood up and grabbed my coat. It was unusually cold for this time of year and it was grey out. Very fitting to my emotions at the moment. "Yea, are you sure you are alright?" He asked. "Yea, I just really need to get out and clear my thoughts." So I got ready to leave and when Hayden went to use the bathroom I wrote a note on a piece of paper that had the address that Justin had given me. I knew that if I wasn't back by 8:00 Hayden would give Maddy and Aiden their baths so I put the note in the drawer with the babies pajamas. If I wasn't back by then, then something was wrong and Nikki and I would need help. So I got in my car and mechanically made the short trip to the old warehouse where Justin had told me to go. When I arrived it had already started to rain. I opened the door and when my eyes adjusted to the darkness I saw Nikki tied up on a chair in the corner. I ran over to where she was and as I was trying to untie her her eyes grew wide. "You always were early." I heard Justin say as I slowly turned around. Only to be met with a gun staring me straight back at me. |
