[Note 1: This list includes cities in the Los Angeles area. Lists for San
Diego, Hawai`i, the San Francisco Bay area, and other geographic areas are in
separate files.]
[Note 2: I collected these comments from a variety of people. I personally
have no knowledge of many of these places and take no responsibility if you
buy a book you don't enjoy. :-) Phone numbers and precise addresses can be
gotten by calling directory assistance for the appropriate city. Call ahead
for precise hours, as even when I list them they are subject to change.]
[Note 3: If you can add information for any of these, in particular
addresses when they are missing, please send it to me. *PLEASE SPECIFY CITY
AND STATE*.]
[Note 4: Area codes change so quickly these days that these may be wrong.]

Berkelouw Books (Highland Ave, Hollywood). "It's a good, clean,
well-stocked used store along the lines of Brand Books in
Glendale. However, despite a good, deep Lit and history
stock, his prices are probably the highest you'll find, for
general Lit hardback. I've found some nice, older
out-of-print titles, 1st editions, though I wasn't always
looking for such. But he doesn't give a discount, as Dutton's
does, and he places price stickers inside the front covers of
all his stock, which are not easily removed, something I've
noticed that no other used book sellers do in the area.
Another small note: he always seems to keep his front door
open, which allows the heavy traffic and dust on Highland Ave,
right out front, over the months and years, to accumulated on
the tops of his book stock. The owner is a nice man, and he
seems quite knowledgeable in his trade. Recommended, but shop
around, I've found the same yr or two old titles I was
looking for at Brand Books, and saved some money too boot. He
does stock clean, quality, though dusty, solid, hardback
books. [07/04]

some are cheaper than Larry Edmunds across the street. Open

Portrait of a Bookstore (4360 Tujunga Avenue, Studio City, at Aroma Coffee
and Tea Company, 818-769-3853). "It's hardly more than a corridor
from the back room of Aroma Cafe to the bookstore's own garden, but
in that elegant little space they have an excellent selection of
literature (much of it commented by the store's very engaged - and
engaging - staff) as well as cookbooks, handsome photography books,
a number of self-help and psychology tomes, a lovingly tended poetry
section and a nook for children complete with touchable toys (many
a parent parks their child there while browsing.) The owner is
married to a TV producer, ... which explains the excellent film and
screenwriting section parked in the cafe's back room. Very much a
booklover's bookstore, and the kind of place where people regularly
say, "How lovely. I never knew this was here."

Brand Bookshop and near Weinstein.
Borders (Brand Ave, Glendale).
Brand Bookshop (231 N Brand Blvd, Glendale, 91203, 818-507-5943).
75,000 used, out-of-print, rare books, 200 categories. "I'd
just like to say that of the thirty or so used book shops I
visit in southern California, this is my favorite--the one, if
I had my choice, that I'd most like to own. It has a large
selection of titles, both hard cover and paperback; its books
have a relatively rapid turnover rate; it is located in a
fairly well patronized central business district; it offers
free parking in a nearby building; it has floors covered by
carpets and attractive shelving; its owner and employees seem
to like books; and its sound system provides classical music
to soothe the soul." Another person writes, "Brand Books is
an old time favorite. Clean, well lighted, with a good
turn-over of stock. I've been going there for a good five
years. The owner seems to favor buying books, as long as he
needs that particular stock, with the notion that if he
doesn't buy from a person now, when he doesn't need stock,
then when he does, that person may not come back to sell.
Brand has a very solid poetry section, European and American
history are standouts as well. The philosophy section could
use shoring up from time to time, but still all major titles
seem to be covered. His general Lit and fiction section is
likewise well stocked. Prices are modest, I've seen higher.
Book quality is generally good. Staff is always helpful. The
owner, Jerome, is charming to talk with. Highly recommended."

Sonia Sachs (ssachs@moonlight.berkeley.edu) reports on the availability
of BROWSING THE BEST WEST COAST USED BOOK STORES: A SELECT GUIDE: I
have discovered a new and very thoughtful California travel guide
called BROWSING THE BEST WEST COAST USED BOOK STORES, [subtitled A
Series of Guides to The Foremost General Stock Used and Out-of-Print
Establishments in Los Angeles, Berkeley, Seattle, San Francisco, San
Diego, Portland, Sacramento & Orange County]. This terrific little
guide--which is actually a series of eight separate folio guides--was
probably intended for visiting scholars and other bibliophiles, but it
will likely appeal to local residents as well because it offers fresh
views of well-known places. Four cities are featured in the first
series of guides--Los Angeles, San Francisco, Berkeley, and Seattle. A
second series of four guides--due out later this year--tours San Diego,
Orange County, Sacramento, and Portland, Oregon. Each guide begins
with introductory essays that expound, quite eloquently and at some
length, on the value of out-of-print bookstore browsing. Readers are
then offered tips on how to browse out-of-print bookstores and
simultaneously avoid big price tags. Would-be hobbyists are shown how
to develop and advance book collections. Novice bibliophiles are given
a glossary of terms to explain different classifications of
books--rare, used, out-of-print, first edition, etc. This is not just
an ode to bookstores. It is an ode to books. The travel aspect is the
guides' most exciting feature. Each guide contains an insightful city
essay and ten descriptive bookstore narratives that go a long way
toward situating the reader in the town he or she is visiting. And who
hasn't been looking for a new way to explore a faraway city?
Individually, these guides form a strong argument that bookstore
touring is the best way to learn the physical and intellectual contours
of any town. Taken together, the guides are nothing less than a grand
tour of literary landmarks all along America's Pacific Coast. Maps, of
course, are included. The author of these guides is a West Coast
native and long-time bibliophile who is not affiliated with any
bookstore or bookstore association. Consequently, and happily so, the
narrative point-of-view is that of a bookbuyer rather than a
bookseller. In terms of style, each guide is often as humorous as it
is telling, and the author does not shy away from pointed comments.
"The Los Angeles metropolitan area is surprisingly good used book store
territory," begins the city essay for the Los Angeles guide.
"Admittedly, there is a glut of shops that tend to feature first
editions of Eddie Fisher's autobiography, but sequestered between all
these hackneyed enterprises are some very reputable bookstores." The
guides, which read like booklets with a map as centerpiece, sell for
$6.00 each. For more information, write Browsing The Best
Publications, Box 7263, Berkeley, California 94707-0263, USA.
