After the first match, Everton appealed against the eligibility of a Bolton Wanderers player. The F.A. upheld the appeal and the match was ordered to be replayed.

After the third replay, Bolton lodged an appeal against the eligibility of seven Everton players. Whilst this appeal was being heard, Everton played Preston North End in the Second Round and lost 6-0. The appeal was finally heard in late December 1887 and Everton were found guilty of providing financial inducements to seven players (H.Goudie, Robert Watson, Cassidy, Alec Dick, Robert Izatt, Murray and J.Weir). As a result, Everton were disqualified from the competition and Bolton progressed in their place to meet Preston North End who had already won their Third Round tie against Halliwell, 4-1. Preston beat Bolton 9-1 in the Second Round and progressed automatically to the 4th round. Everton's match against Preston in the Second Round was officially expunged from the records.
