The Quest For A Castle…

…or The Journal of the New House

June 5, 2002
Wednesday

I spent all day putting the garage door opener up. I
took my sweet time because I didn’t want to screw this
one up…

Tuesday

The DirecTV guy came and installed the satellite. I
spent Sunday in the attic running phone lines to the
cable outlets and bracing for ceiling fans and now I’m
ready to watch some World Cup action!

Saturday

Moving Day!! We got the big truck and took one load
over to the new place. All the furniture and boxes in
place.

Friday

Day one of the World Cup. As I pack the van I watch
Senegal shock defending champions France 1-0. We
close at 9 a.m. and then unload the van at the new
house. After getting the rest of our stuff from
SIL2’s house, we start moving from my brother-in-law’s
house…

Wednesday

We had our meeting and walk-through with the builder
and we will be ready to go for closing.

Tuesday

All that is left to install is the carpet and we will
be ready to close on the 31st!

Thursday

I met with the mortgage company and signed the papers
for the loan. Less than a month to go now…

April 6, 2002
Saturday

We moved in with SIL2 and it took a few days to work
out the sleeping arrangements, but it all worked out
well. Somewhere at the first of the month I went to
the house and ran cable and phone lines. I didn’t run
phone lines to the cable outlets, however; a mistake
that would catch up to me…

Saturday

We were supposed to move in with sister-in-law number
two (SIL2), but SIL1 felt slighted and gave the missus
a guilt trip so we stayed with her for another week...

March 23, 2002
Saturday

Moving out day! We moved in with sister-in-law number
one (SIL1) for what was to be a one week stay in their
basement. We took all of our worldly possessions and
put them in Mrs. X's brother's garage and basement.

Monday
Well the windows are in, the roof is complete, and the fireplace is in.  That is the good news.  The bad: we have to be out of our old house on Saturday, so we will be moving in with family until our house is complete.  Wish me luck...

March 8, 2002
Friday
We have walls!!  Well, the framing anyway and the trusses for the roof are in the mud in what will be the front yard.

February 21, 2002
Thursday
The lumber has been delivered to the site.  Now we have to wait for the framing to be done.  Hopefully not too long...

Wednesday
We still only have a foundation...

January 11, 2002
Friday
Well we finally have a foundation poured.  It was dark when we drove past, but the concrete was up and the forms had been removed, so it must have been poured at least at the start of the week.

December 27, 2001
Thursday
We closed on the house today and are now officially renting.  Now if they would only hurry up and get our new house built...

December 22, 2001
Saturday
Well, as of today, we still have no foundation poured.  Grrr...

December 8, 2001
Saturday
We went to the lot to see if there was any progress.  It looked like the house was staked off so digging should start anytime..

November 19, 2001
Monday
We met the builder and finalized our order.  Now we wait a month and hope for good weather so the foundation can be poured.

October 28, 2001
Saturday
We paid a visit to the new neighborhood to start the task of picking out our options.

October 23, 2001
Tuesday
Three more groups looking through the house. They were finally done at 6:30. Two hours later our agent calls to say he is coming over. It turns out that three of the four groups that looked at the house have submitted a contract. We picked one and just like that, our house has sold. Now we have to get started with the new one so we can get construction going before the ground freezes.  We also got a call from the lady at the subdivision.  She said they made a mistake and our house will actually need a walk-out basement.  Since we were told originally it didn't have a walk out basement, they are going to waive the $3100 extra cost that this should have.  Of course this means that we will probably have to get a deck put on the main level.  But we're saving money right...?

October 22, 2001
Monday
Our first tour. Our agent brought over a couple to look at our house. I hope they didn’t look in the cabinets.

October 20, 2001
Saturday
We met with the real estate agent and put the sign in the yard. We know have our house for sale, although the listing won’t show up until Monday.

October 17, 2001
Wednesday
I drove out after work to put the deposit down and lock in to the current prices before everything goes up. An hour and $500 later, we have a lot reserved.

October 16, 2001
Tuesday
We decided that we should build in the place we looked at over the weekend. A phone call was made to let them know. They had the lot that we looked at still available.

October 13, 2001
Saturday
We loaded the little Xs in the Van and headed out west in our search for a new Castle. We found a neighborhood that looked nice enough. They are just completing Phase 2 of the subdivision, so prices are going up within a month. Only a few lots left. We left after looking at a few houses. That was the only place we looked that day.
