My family is a middle class family. Both my mom and dad were born and educated in Taiping and currently still working in Taiping. My dad, Kuan Toh Teong works as a dispenser in Taiping Medical Centre while my mom, Kong Yoke Ying is a science teacher at Hua Lian Secondary School. I have two elder brothers, both working as well, the eldest, Kelvin, is currently working in Singapore while the second, Steven, is attached to Intel at Kulim. I am of course the youngest among the three, and the only one still studying, earning my degree at Multimedia University in Cyberjaya, Selangor. My dad is the second youngest child among seven children born in 1947 to Kuan Cheng Kau, my paternal grandfather and Cheng Fong Ngor, my paternal grandmother (there were supposedly more children as accounted by my eldest aunt, the original number being eleven children. One girl didn't make through her teens, one boy died at 3 days old, one was aborted in an accident and another followed my grandmother to the grave when she passed away in her thirties in 1950). |

My dad grew up mostly in the care of his elder siblings, as my grandmother passed away of an unknown illness while he was 3 years old and my grandfather of nose cancer 12 years later. He went to the same school as I and my brothers would many years later, St. George's Institution, Taiping. He married my mom in 1971. My dad enjoys jogging, a pastime which I picked up later. He regularly attends his running group the Hash House Harriers (HHH) every Sunday. My dad still joins marathons even though currently now in his early fifties and still brings home medals! |

My mom is the eldest of two daughthers born to Kong Peng and Chan Heng in 1947. Also a Taiping girl through and through, she grew up in a poor family where my grandparents worked as laundry cleaners in the then infamous Dhobby Lane (Dhobby Lane back in my mom's childhood days and even mine, was a street lined with wooden houses where most people work as laundry cleaners, washing with water flowing from Taiping's Lake Gardens). She attended school in Convent Kota Girl's School and was trained as a teacher in Johor. She was first posted to Langkawi Island, before returning to teach in Taiping and married my dad in 1971. She is still currently a teacher at Hua Lian Secondary School. My mom is a ballroom dance and jewelry enthusiast and attends dancing classes with my dad every Tuesday at the Chinese Recreation Club (CRC). |

My eldest brother was born in 1972, while my second brother was born in 1976 and I, four years later in 1980. All three of us were educated in the same school as our father. My eldest brother has a diploma in electronic engineering (Megatech Institute) and degree in information technology (Multimedia University) while my second brother has a diploma in mechanical engineering (Linton College).
