Eva's Wonderful World of Flute

Music

I've been playing flute since fourth grade and the piccolo since tenth grade. I was a student of UNC's flute professor, Brooks de Wetter-Smith. I'd like to thank my teacher back home, Becky Swann, for making me do those Trevor Wye exercises and sightreading all those flute duets; otherwise, I wouldn't be playing at the level I'm at. (Thanks, Becky!)

I have been involved with numerous musical ensembles throughout my flute-playing career. I've played with my high school concert and marching bands, the Peniel Community Band (in Newport, DE), the Delaware All-State Bands and Orchestra, the University of Delaware Summer Wind Ensemble, the University of North Carolina Marching Tar Heels, the UNC University Band, the UNC Wind Ensemble (formerly known as the Symphonic Band), the University of Richmond Symphony Orchestra and the University of Richmond Chamber Ensembles.

I've had the privilege to be a part of the Orchestra for several musicals, including Peter Pan, The Secret Garden, A Christmas Carol, and Ask Any Girl.

I played piccolo with the UNC Marching Tar Heels. The Flute Dawgs received the "Best Section Award" for the 1996-1997 school year! Flute Dawgs... WOOF!

I was privileged to be the first chair flutist for the UNC Wind Ensemble for two semesters. It was a challenge, but I definitely had fun! I'd like to give a shout out to my flute groupies--Sarah G, Sonya, Kara, and Amy! I miss you ladies...

I also played flute in the University of Richmond orchestra. It was a lot of fun!! I'm actually included on some of the pictures on the U of R Orchestra's home page! Check this out: U of R Orchestra... I'm the flute player in the striped shirt on the top picture, and I'm the soloist in the picture in the bottom right-hand corner. Cool!

Now I play flute with the University of Richmond's chamber ensembles. I'm in a flute trio and a flute/voice/piano trio.

Here's a list of our upcoming concerts for the chamber ensembles:

For those of you who are curious, I've had the privilege of playing under the following conductors: Jay Bocook, Anthony Maiello, Don Wilcox, Timothy Mahr, David Blackinton, Davin Pierson Torre, Michael Votta, Fred Cohen and Donald Hunsberger. My absolute favorite songs that we've played are: Gandalf the Wizard by Johann de Meij, Ghost Train by Eric Whitacre, Symphony #8 in G Major by Antonin Dvorak, and Funeral March by Edvard Grieg. I also enjoyed playing the solo flute part for The Star Wars Trilogy (arranged by Donald Hunsberger) for our UNC Wind Ensemble tour; and first flute for Endurance, which was written by my All-State conductor during my senior year in high school, Dr. Timothy Mahr.

One last thought for ya: Here's a quote from Rent, a Broadway musical. I hope you like it -- I do!!

There's only us
There's only this
Forget regret
Or life is yours to miss
No other road
No other way
No day but today.

Tibicina Sum!
