America Fails History Class
by Charles E. Brown / EWM PSI

In America, we are often preoccupied by events vastly outside of World events. Our media is saturated with stories concerning the Investigation of Gary Condit, the return of Michael Jordan and the state of the economy, amidst what some would refer to as a recession. However, many countries in the world are faced with plagues that make our headlines pale by comparison.

While we slept in our beds, we felt safe as if nothing could penetrate this countries super-power-shield against terrorist attacks. Unfortunately, the terrorists were not sleeping; they have obviously spent many sleepless nights planing while we slept. If it's an "A" for dedication they're after, they have earned an "A+".

What will America do now? The world is waiting for a response from a country that has spent the last few decades, preaching to the rest of the world how it should run it's affairs. Will America now set the standard of how terrorism should be dealt with? I would imagine that the terrorist would not have planned such an assault if they were truly afraid of an American response. Why would they not be afraid you ask? It's simple, they have recent history as a guide to what the U.S. will and won't do to deal with terrorist attacks on U.S. soil and abroad!

The bombing of the U.S.S. Cole, the tandem bombings of U.S. Embassy buildings in Kenya and Tanzania, and even the Oklahoma City bombing are examples of a U.S response to terrorism. The culprits of the U.S.S. Cole bombing are still at large; and the Embassy bombings at Kenya and Tanzania are still being investigated with few results. Although Timothy Mcvey has been executed in the aftermath of Oklahoma City, the mistakes made in that tragedy showed a "flaw" in the "gem" of U.S defenses.

We have spent decades being politically correct in public (media), while exhibiting our true character in private (domestic and foreign policies). U.S. citizens have indulged in hugging trees and kissing whales while turning a deaf ear and blind eye to death and mayhem in the Middle East and Asia. Americans freely relieve themselves of their disposable income, engaging in frivolity while the world deals with terrorists and the collateral damage of their acts. We have bought homes to take advantage of the low interest rates. We have invested in domestic and world economy, to ride the once booming stock market. Furthermore, we have waited with arrogant anticipation for a Federal Government refund to further indulge ourselves. All of this while refusing to increase defenses spending by one red penny.

As Americans, we are now faced with the raw and naked truth, that none of the things once deemed news worthy, socially significant and economically impacting are really all that important at all. Unfortunately, like so many other lessons in life, this tutorial comes from the school of hard knocks. A school that is currently run by terrorist groups all too eager to educated America on its lack of observance of world affairs. The U.S. has been the victim of a pop quiz, and America has failed Terrorism 101.

We as citizens of the United States of America, must reevaluate what is truly important before we loose our freedom! Freedom has a heavy price, it requires that those who desire to remain free, be willing to give up the right to exercise certain freedoms in order to protect other freedoms that are more important. We have denied this responsibility for a long time and we are now paying the price. Without an America, there is no place to argue about dying whales, dwindling timberlands, tax relief and public official under investigation.

The U.S military has been in need of an overhaul for a couple of decades. We have been warned by our Department of Defense of serious problems with aging equipment and technology as well as a general lack of funds. Of course, our response to this was to tell the government that placing the activities of bomb shopping and the participation in war game scenario exercises is not as relevant as other problems. We need more money to go towards education, we said. We must provide support for the foreign economy, we added. However, what we overlooked is the fact that if U.S soil is invaded or is taken hostage by home grown terrorism, of what use are any of our other pursuits?

History repeats itself, and human beings don't seem to learn from repeating the class, no matter how many times they are handed the same syllabus. Undoubtedly, America will respond to this terrorist act. The real question is, whether Americans will respond to the call to keep America free!
