Phoenix : Calf or Lamb?

DATE : 16-5-01        OPPONENTS : Exeter I vs Exeter II
RESULT : 4-3          AUTHOR OF REPORT : Fads

One might have expected a game between teammates to be a fun affair with a
minimum of banter. And the no…

The Damage looked pumped up and Fox focussed and full of chat. The 2nds (JK, TeeHee, Fads, Damage) had a huddle to decide who would play whom. It was decided that Fads would play Golden Stevenson, JK would play Barkworth, Lewton vs Fox, leaving the ultimate glamour tie of Damage vs Clifford. Fads signalled his intentions by sinking a Vodka-Red Bull early doors. Fads vs Stevenson wasn't a classic leg, it featured some healthy scoring, Fads got his nose in front at the end, and held on for a good win. JK had been throwing good darts and Barkworth had a poor haircut. This was the 2nd team's banker, but as usual Barkworth won (though if JK hadn't busted 134 T20, 14, T20 it might have been different). Fox threw the best leg (about 25-26) and beat Lewton comfortably. The Damage against Clifford was the main event.

Up until this point banter had been restricted to "Fuck up you Irish potato",
"Where's you uncle Padraig", "How much did your haircut cost?", "Have you got rickets" and "Wife Beater". However some inspired work from Fads, led to a foot and mouth infected calf banter line for Clifford. Everyone laughed
apart from Phoenix. Damage started with 140 and looked in control until
Phoenix threw a timely 140 of his own. Then Savory showed why he is the
Damage and replied with another 140. Clifford with a 140 point deficit and
severe blistering of his feet and mouth, folded looking like he had
ordered a cheese pizza.

2-2. The doubled pitted the cuppers seeded combination of Stevenson and
Clifford against the old timers Savory and Fads. It was an average leg and both pairs had darts at it, but Savory hit X4 to bring the house down. Fox/Barkworth vs TeeHee/JK was a tough match on paper but Fox made darts look like an easy game and led Haircut and the firsts to a beerleg.

The beerleg was a good laugh, especially as Phoenix was at breaking point. The scores were close from 1001-300 (even though Fads threw 3ahhh), but then the 2nds threw an 85, 60, 100 combination leaving them 98 and a healthy 150 point lead. JK threw 20, then T20 to leave us X9. He missed leaving it to TeeHee.

The 1sts chipped away at the lead, TeeHee left Savory 9 and the 1sts were
encouraged more. Savory, then Fads, then Jk and then Lewton missed the 1 to
leave x4, by which time the 1sts were down to x7. Savory hit 1, and then threw a dart...x13. The 1sts missed. Fads threw 1, then....x13 again! Then 1sts
captain GB Stevenson threw x7 to finish the game. There were cries of "hard
cheese" and "nooooo" but I think the 1sts got lucky a bit. Savory was in
an awful mood but darts is a game where getting down quickly must be
complemented by swift doubling out.
