Firsts Almost Make The Seconds Look Good DATE : 18-5-01 OPPONENTS : Keble I (h) RESULT : Won 7-5 AUTHOR OF REPORT : Andrew Fadden |
The Keble team (who’d beaten our seconds in the previous round) arrived twos by twos and generally looked nothing like a darts team. Lewton needed to go earlier so was chucked in the deep-end against their number 1, George (aka Meatloaf) and lost. Stevenson then had a titanic struggle against an American called Bill, who could take his banter. Despite good scoring from both men, a madhouse shootout occurred, which Graham won. He received a bonus pint from Julie who had decided that the American was an asshole. Savory maintained his recent rich vein of form with a convincing win and then the skipper "Foxy" did the same impressively. 3-1, things were looking good. Then, Fads decided to score well and establish a 150 point lead and then not double out. Clifford's leg was closer but with the same result. 3-3 now, not so good. Fox and Stevenson's doubles happened early and they also lost. There was now a good chance that we were going out. 3-4 Of late, Barkworth's been a bit random and we really needed him to throw a good leg. He obliged but Killer came up against Steph's mate who was disappointingly good and lost. 4-5. In this type of situation there is no replacement for experience and the skipper thrust Old Father Time himself into the mixer. Killer and the Damage played a great leg and levelled the tie (Savory impressed with 140 and 100 in the leg). Realising this was going the distance, Teehee was called from his dinner in St.Clements. In the meantime, perhaps the biggest carrying job outside of the World's Strongest Man contest was performed by Fads (2 140s) as he led Clifford to his first leg in living memory. Lewton and Barkworth played the 12th leg against Meatloaf and their handy board 8, but pulverised them, with Tom "Haircut" Barkworth landing double 4, to book a place against St. Catz in the last eight of cuppers |
