Sultoon Shines As Old Boys Roll Back The Years

DATE : 12-1-01        OPPONENTS : Old boys
RESULT : Lost 5-7     AUTHOR OF REPORT : Graham Hales
The old boys rolled into town on Saturday evening for a match that their past records suggested they should win. Yet by the time Sparkes’s dart had flown into double 11, they were three-nil down and facing a familiar uphill task. The two lambs at the top of the order, Hales and McBurnie, duly lost to Stephenson and Clifford, the highlights of the legs being a 140 and a 100 from Stephenson and inshots of 100 from Clifford and 116 from McBurnie. The
words “Extra, extra” were still ringing in Clifford’s ears as Sparkes stuck a knife into his old team-mates to make it three, despite the pictures of birds being held up along the oche. Balo stepped up for the fourth leg with work to do.
His celebrations showed how important his win was, and from then on it was all Old Boys. Killingley’s frustration was clear (above). Cox then took out Damage to general acclaim by hitting double 8, and Davis won a low-standard war of attrition against Teehee. Fads then staked a claim for a recall to the opposition by defeating Barkworth before Sultoon and Fox stepped up for the leg of the night, with the score at 4-3 to the Old Boys.
With Sultoon only getting in on the 16th dart, Fox was already below 100. Even lining up beside the board bending the knees failed to distract him. After six darts, however, Sultoon found himself on 298 as Fox threatened to close the leg out. The Turk’s response was immaculate : three perfect darts left 118 after a superb 180, despite an action that George memorably described as “like playing paper-scissors-stone but always going scissors.”
His subsequent 68 left the bull, and the hapless Fox could only watch as Sultoon’s first dart shot straight into the centre of the board. This surely settled the match.

The first eight’s tail wagged as Barkworth and Killingley did for Sultoon and Cox thanks to Barkworth finishing 57, but as DV carried Hales to victory over the demoralised Fox and Lewton, it seemed all over. Sure enough, Fads and McB saw off Savory and Sparkes to finish it at 7-4. Stevenson and Clifford stopped Balo and Davis to keep the score close, but the beer-leg also went to the old boys and
the students were left to prepare harder than ever for their Queens away match later in the term.
