Chumps Turn Out For Old Boys Match

DATE : 16-6-01        OPPONENTS : Old boys match
RESULT : 4-3          AUTHOR OF REPORT : Graham Hales
Well, it didn’t look like it would be much of a darts match. Here’s the flop for the old boys :

Cox—And the no.
Davis—And the no.
Devaney—And the no.
Sultoon—And the no.
McBurnie—And the no.
Savory—And the no. Nobody seems to have seen him recently.

So it was left to Balo, Hales and ageing stioudent Sparkes to make up the old boys contingent. With Stevenson at home and Clifford wasting his evening watching Pearl Harbor, plus no sign of Killingley or Barkworth, we were in trouble.

Exeter’s second string saved the day. Here’s how they lined up.

Stephany vs Fox
Okada vs Sparkes
Balo vs Jimmy
Barkworth vs George
Hales vs Fads

The format—5 singles and 2 beerlegs.

Stephany, reassured that the bookies have stopped taking bets on his Tory leadership bid, threw some decent darts against Fox but never really looked like winning it. That’s 1-0 to Fads’s boys. Fox then went off to put in some campbed hours.

He missed the leg of the night as Yuhei Okada, who once threatened never to throw a dart again in protest at his poor form, defeated former darts hero Rob Sparkes on a cameo appearance. A cheeky double 6 won it, although to be fair Sparkes had fucked himself over by hitting treble 16 with his third dart having been on 51.

After Okada’s heroics, Balo’s side were lifted and the captain brushed aside the challenge of the one armed man. Then George stepped up to the oche to produce some quality arrows. His textbook ton was the highlight of the leg but Barkworth did provide value. He succeeded in busting 140, seeing off the “Ganger” taunts to win the leg anyway.

3-1 down with three to play and Fads stopped the rot, taking out a routine two-dart finish in style against Hales, who had to fight the “gay” banter after he was accused of wearing a top that was slightly too tight. With their tails up, Fads’s boys stepped up for the beer legs.

Unfortunately I can’t remember anything about them but Fad played well I think, and his team won them both.  The standard was poor though. It really was a case of Chumps 4 Chumps 3.
Yo ho ahoy darts!
