That's Darts DATE : 24-5-01 OPPONENTS : St Catz (h) RESULT : Lost 7-6 AUTHOR OF REPORT : Ben Fox |
The dream is over. Catz came, saw and beat us. Not the best way to end the Fox regime, but better than losing the final to Queens I suppose. To be fair, they had a game plan, stuck to it and won a tightly fought game 6-7. Here's the gist of the evening. Ed had to play early (something about Formal hall at Hildas, aka Campbederry - Fads said he thought he'd never see the day) so they sportingly sent down a lamb in the form of a slightly uglier version of the Right Rev Ian Paisley. Ed was in front for the whole leg, then had the audacity to shout at kils half way through the leg for 'not concentrating on ed's game' or something. Still, the self-confessed Damage was way ahead and only had to double out. Well that's 1-0. TO THEM. Graham sportingly played doubles so damaged could leave early and they parity was quickly restored. GB then played his singles and that would be a 2-1 lead to take into the evening session. Not bad - but no 3-0. Catz's game plan then clicked in and set the tone for the rest of the night. As Fads and Bark pointed out we let them dictate matters - I take responsibility for that - the result being the games were played in the order that their players decided to grace us with their presence (Davis/Cox/bale are all turning in their grave). Still, Fadsy was up first and secured a 3-1 victory doubling out on x6 with the words 'You'll never hit this in a million years' ringing in his ears from his Northern Irish colleague - Paisley. The rest is a bit of a blur, suffice to say Fox was the only other singles player to bag a win - with the usually reliable tail all losing - albeit tight matches. Special mention here must go to Clifford and Barkworth, both made their singles games more difficult by throwing a dart at the opposition (Cliff) and screaming in some cocky twat's ear while he was playing (Bark) - apparently both are seen as in 'poor taste' these days - although obviously they extracted some form of moral revenge during the respective legs. That meant going into the doubles 5-4 down, so Fox and Fads stepped up and a nice tops from the big irishman saw us level once more. Bark and Lewton pushed us into a lead 6-5 and it was left to cliff and kils to hols their end up. They didn't but they had plenty of darts at a double - so that's a BEERLEG. Live by the sword, die by the sword. Our last two games had been tight and maybe we got our just-desserts. With dward far away in the land of campbed we wangled the ever-young honky onto our team and looked forward to him hitting the winning double. He didn't get a chance - i wasn't looking when the winning dart went in so i don't know to which cunt i should attribute the victory. So in conclusion, we were never up for it as a team - if we'd played a bigger name we would have risen to the occasion and as a team were not focussed enough on the job in hand. Fair play to catz they came and man for man were better than us - although I still claim we were the better team. Our strength throughout the season has been as a team and last night we were more like a collection of individuals - if we'd have scraped though I know we'd have won the semi - and to be honest probably the final. In the FA cup you have to beat the Kidderminster Harriers to get a crack at the Liverpools. And we didn't. Stevenson is the only one left in singles - he and cliff are also soldiering on in doubles - as are Barkworth and Lewton. The 1sts fours are still looking strong - but presumably we'll get Teddy Hall 5ths in the next round and go for an early bath. |
